Oh apparently

If you use Thief! you loose reputation no matter what, chances of success is valued on reputation. To gain reputation you have only one way to do so, members on the board rating you up (So post stuff that's significant and gets members to rate you up). On the same flip of the coin members can also rate you down making your reputation worse.

Well your rep does a couple things. For one, it makes you harder to steal from if you have higher rep. ^^ It's also an indicator of how reliable for information, or if you have a history of good posts.

I think PP found it funny because you don't see that phrase often here. People don't seem to use it a lot on this forum. Apparently people trolling for rep points has had a negative effect on some other boards like Alla, but I wouldn't really know since I never visit their forums.

Anyway, please do continue to use it when appropriate. I'm gonna go ahead and reset your rep. There really oughta be a warning button on that thing.

Yeah, I think you get like 15 gil a post or something, so it'd take 525 posts to get a custom title. So far as I know rep doesn't affect that.
