Why don't you just try and look it up. -.- What it adds depends. Go look them up and see what they add. If you wanna know what they add exactly, ask that. Don't ask what they add in general, that's kinda ummmm.. stupid and logical.

Well basically what I am asking is, how are they implemented into the game... For example, would a Blue mage be able to be seen by a person who doesn't have the expansion, etc...
1. areas
2. missions
3. quests
4. jobs (only w/ Zilart, not Promathia)
they do NOT add or concern;
1. abilities or traits to existing jobs
2. items that can only be obtained in expansion areas can still be sold/traded to those without expansions, provided they r not EX (stands for exclusive, means non-tradable) items. also, those without expansions have the access to the same item and graphic files, so u can still see the items when u "check" other players, and expansion-only equipments can still be viewed.
3. u can even form a party w/ added jobs even if u don't have Zilart. and for the the same reason as 2., graphics of the abilities can still be seen by those without. one example is summoner's avators that can be seen by everyone, while without Zilart u can only have Curbuncle, the very basic avator.
u can think of it as a "passport." without one u can't travel outside of the country (go to new areas), can't directly buy dvd's of ur favorite anime (obtain expansion-area-only items), and denied access to the international flights at the port of departures even if u have tickets (won't get quests/missions offered).
but u can still buy the dvd's if can find an import store (access to expansion-only items, don't tell me u can buy them online lol), and ur friends can still talk to u about their experiences abroad, or even show u the move they learnt at the famous Karate gyms w/ his Karate uniform (can still see the added jobs and equipments).
I assume that there will be a game update when the expansion is realeased to add these graphic files etc. so non expansion pack people can stillsee everything mentioned above.
No, you can see things from the game because the information is given by the server. Some information is loaded from the client, such as .dat files, and that is why no new Equipment is added in expansions. Also, area's are loaded from the client, and you can access those either. But you can see someone being in that area(by using /search all name for example), cause that is just the area name provided by the server, not from your FFXI files on your computer.

what Jarre said is basically true. for the purpose of display, graphics, stats, and icons of equipments r all loaded from the client side, not the server.
while the expansion disks themselves might not add the .dat files, they still undergo the patch when the expansion is released, for which one of the reasons being to make new equipments to be displayable on the clients without expansion. and in reality, expansions do add the equipments, such as those dropped by NM's in new areas, to which those without expansion do have access. by this it means they can see the graphics of, and that they can see the stats of them when u "check" them.
