  • New Player's Guide to Everything FFXI.

Ok, I'm making a guild for all new players to read in order for them to stop posting the same threads and getting the same answers. Everything you need to know that is a general conscensus of the FFXI community. This will be a guide for players from level 1 with no sub to level 30, when they can unlock their advanced jobs.

    Picking a Race:

There are five races in FFXI you can choose from: Hume, Elvaan, Galka, Mithra, Tarutaru.

Hume: Humes are the average Jo's...don't have an excess of anything, but they aren't deficcient (sp) in anything either. This race can truly become any job in FFXI, and do it well.

Elvaan: Elvaan make the best DRK and MNKs from what I've seen. They have low MP, but high MND and CHR. Taru might be a better choice for BRD and BST seeing how they have higher MP, but if you don't want to be 1 foot tall, go with elvaan. Elvaan have the worst INT in the game, so they make statistically the worst BLMs, but honestly, race doesn't matter in this game.

Galka: Galka are VIT whores....if you're a Galka PLD, you get a lot of love. Decent STR also, but low CHR and the worst MP in this game makes them hard to play as BRD or BST.

Mithra: Much like Humes, but they have a higher DEX and AGI. They give up CHR for this though. Mithra statistically make the best THFs and are very good at mage jobs too. But low VIT and CHR don't help them as tanks.

Taru: If you like being a mage, taru is the choice for you. They have the highest MP and INT in this game. If you like blowing shit up, you'll love being a Taru BLM. They suffer as tanks though, because they have the lowest VIT and STR in the game.

NOTE: None of these races are bad at any job they play, they may suffer statistically, but the order of who makes the best what is as follows:
    Skill > Equipment > Race

    Jobs:

There are 6 jobs to choose from at the beginning of the game, which will expand at level 30 when you have the ability to do the advanced job quests. The jobs are Warrior, White Mage, Red Mage, Black Mage, Thief, Monk.

    Warrior:

This job can be used in many ways. You can be a tank or a damage dealer. If there is no PLD or NIN in your party, you're tanking. You should Provoke as much as possible, and try to keep the hate on you so you get hit. If you're a DD, just sit there, and report your TP so you can skillchain. I'll explain what skillchains are later. The only thing you should be subbing to 30 (if you don't have advanced jobs yet) is Monk...THF doensn't do anything for you IMO, seeing as how you get Sneak attack at 30...even then you're a gimp DD, THF sub is best at 60 when you have access to trick attack as well. Monk gives you STR, VIT, DEF, and at level 10 it gives you the ability to use Boost, which will help with damage output and keeping hate.

    White Mage: (

My favorite job) You will be the main healer, no argument. Do not melee, as you will skill up your skills later as a WHM. DO NOT MELEE! It causes more downtime and it hurts the party. The only support job you should be using when you start out is Black Mage. BLM gives you more MP, and gives you a magic attack bonus while soloing at level 20 (at level 20 you won't be soloing for XP as any job except BST, I'm talking about farming). Get BLM up there as your support job, and you will be loved by all.

    Red Mage:

Ok...there's many things you can be doing as RDM at this level, so honestly, do whatever your heart desires. You can melee since up until level 30, RDMs do decent DMG. You can nuke your heart out, and you can main heal. But one thing I would recommend would be to have your enfeebling magic capped out at all times, seeing as that's what a RDM does best. Now for subjobs, you can sub BLM for more MP, or WHM for the handy spells it will give you, like bar-ra spells, and status-na spells which will definitely help while soloing and in parties.

    Black Mage:

Black mage is fun...You get to blow shit up. If you're a BLM, learn how to magic burst early (I'll explain later.) This is the core of all of your damage in the party, and it adds an element of excitement to the job. For low level BLMs, sub WHM...many higher level BLMs sub RDM, but you don't really get any good abilities until level 60 as BLM/RDM. And IMO...if you're a BLM/RDM, and don't have WHM leveled, too bad when you need a teleport after level 72...it's a subjob, level it!

    Monk:

Monk is a fun job, it's very easy to solo to level 15. You can even tank in parties until about 25 (I've seen it done). MNK is purely a DD job. You will be skillchaining, and doing damage if you are not on the rare occasion asked to tank pre-Kazham. Definitely level WAR sub for MNK, more STR and VIT, makes it a very good combination. Do not sub THF....it's a useless sub until 60 unless you're farming.

    Thief:

THF is a pretty nice job. You'll be DD and puller, meaning you will go and get mobs for the party to fight. THFs can solo pretty well seeing how their evasion is very high. But, many complain they can't get a party before level 15 when they get Sneak Attack. Sneak attack will put a lot of damage onto a mob. Use it often, and use it a lot. For NIN, I'd suggest subbing WAR, provoke is a very handy move since at low levels you can do a small amount of tanking if the mob was to unexpectedly go hit a BLM or WHM. MNK works too, because more HP and VIT, but I'd say WAR is the best because more STR and the ability to Provoke.

    Skillchains:

Here's how they work...you should always, ALWAYS skillchain in parties, the added damage from it, and the magic burst will make a fight go much, much faster.

Once you and another person in your party have 100% TP, you can use your weponskills, if you use certain weaponskills in the right order, you open up a skillchain. When you and the other person have 100% TP, the person who's using the weaponskill first will go. Now, for me personally, wait two seconds after you see their weaponskill animation, then use yours. If done right, you can open up a skillchain.

    Magic Bursting:

This is for you people who like to blow shit up. Depending on what the skillchain was, you can cause a powerful magic burst off of it. It's all elemental based, so you need to burst the right element off of the right skillchain to have the damage done.

    http://www.adennak.com/renkei.html

This is a good, if not the best skillchain chart I've ever seen. Learn to read it, learn to use it. And your XP will flow like wine.

    Missions:

Get your rank up.....it's very embarrasing to be rank 1 at level 30...get into missions, not only can you make money, but it helps when looking for invites, because people judge you by your job combinations, and by your rank.

    Making Macros:

Marcos are simple to make, and will make things easier.

Here's an example of a macro:

    /ja "Provoke" <t>

The /ja means "Job Ability". "Provoke" is the job ability being used. <t> is what it's being used on.

There's many different things you can do with macros, make magic, make emotes, but use them, you have to...if you don't this game will be very frustrating to you.

/ma is used for magic..... /ma "Cure" <t> or /ma "Aero" <t> will be enough for magic. There's also some self job abilities you need to use...Sneak attack and Boost for example will go like this: /ja "Boost" <me> /ja "Sneak Attack" <me>. The <me> puts your name in the macro, and makes the job ability able to be used on you.

    Making gil:

DO NOT, DO NOT, DO NOT, DO NOT, DO NOT, DOOOOOO NOOOOOOOOOOOT, go around asking players for gil...nothing more fucking annoying than some level 20 RDM asking everyone in my dynamis LS for 5,000 gil so he can buy blink. We made out money by ourselves, we get to keep it, you have no right to ask another player for his gil and expect to get some in return. Here's some tips for farming:

Bastok: Kill bees...the alchemy guild is in Bastok, and beehive chips sell for 10k a stack on my server. A day of farming at your level, you'll farm plenty of chips, and have enough gil to last you a long time.

Sandoria: Bat wings are very good to sell in Sandy. It's a fast way for low levels to get fame. Go out, and kill as many bats as possible. Then when you have a few stacks of wings, sell them on the AH. I belive they go for 4-6k a stack on my server.

Windurst: Kill crawlers for silk thread. Kill Yagudos for Necklaces...easy as that.

    Mannerisms:

If someone doesn't want to help you out, don't get angry.

Don't /shout to ask a question. Ask a linkshell, and if you can't find anything out from them, ask a higher level player, but don't ask for gil!

Don't be a dumbass in a party. If you are given some task, complete the task...nothing pisses me off more than when I'm in the dunes, and I tell a guy to pull a Lizard, and I see /p Goblin Ambusher Incoming!.

Don't act like a noob, noobs ask too many questions, what you honestly should do is experiment a bit with what you think the best armor set up, macro set up should be. It's annoying if you give a higher level player 40 questions that you probably could have answered by coming here nad looking them up.

Remember your pleases and thank yous, the only thing that will get you farther in this game is a reward of gil.

    Things to remember:

It takes time...if you don't get a party for 6 hours, don't complain about it, in that 6 hours of looking for party, you could have been killing EPs, which drop items that you could sell for money, as well as getting 40xp a pop.

This is everyone's game. You might see somebody speaking a different language...don't tell them to speak in English, it makes you look like an ass, and unless the person is talking TO YOU, they shouldn't have to speak in a language you understand.

High level players are willing to help a lot of the time, but don't go asking for a lot, being too ambitious in this game annoys people. If you need a lot of things done, don't expect to do them in one day. Take time off, farm, level, then you can go and get help with a mission.

When you're in a party, be polite, use correct grammar (funny how I didn't do that in this thread), spell out all your words, and don't act like a child.

Be patient...the only way you'll get anywhere in this game is with patience.

Remember to use food in parties. Different foods do different things. So experiment a little, and find out what's best for your playing style.

Ok, I'm done and I've killed an hour at work. If anyone else will post any HELPFUL tips for new low level players, be my guest. I honestly don't know why this thread wasn't made a long time ago :/

Re: New Player's Guide to Everything FFXI.

Many people have posted things like this on many different sites. The problem is many people don't even think to look for them. Which brings me to my tip: since many people have taken the time to write fine guides such as this, you should research anything you are looking for. There is much information on this site, gamefaqs, alakazam, etc., that you will barely have to ask any questions at all. So if you are not sure what to do, try finding the information online. If you are truely lost though, we will be more than happy to answer any questions.

By the way, great starting guide. I just hope new players take the time to read it.
You kill one man, your a murderer
Kill many and your a conquerer
Kill them all... your a God.

unfortunatly, what above poster said is very true, no one who's looking for these answers will ever look in here, people should be forced to read a warning post telling them to SEARCH for info before posting upon registering, like, huge red arrows frenetically blinking in such a way that they would get an headache until they clicked the damn link

nice Rodin. it's a bit too opinionated for my tastes, but it should go well with:
