I felt that your comment was a bit rude. He's not asking for a major change, but the addition of one forum focus on real world news. And I don't see the news and suggestions topic flooded with a lot of new people with new ideas, in fact he seems to be the first in a month or so. Unless you're talking about the SE forums, which is a totally different matter. I wasn't being rude either, I was just asking why you made that unneeded comment towards him.

It's not necessary. We're not suffering for lack of it, and we already have forums that can be used for that purpose. Honestly, we have too many forums as it is.
Then you should have said that in your first post instead of commenting on the fact the OP *made* the suggestion. As for having too many forums, there are only seven non-ffxi related forums, that's not a lot. On top of that, they are all rather slow and quiet so it's not like we're being overrun with new topics and posts every day. And no one ever said anything about it being necessary, it was asked if it would be a good idea to give people a focal point on news related topics and intelligent discussions. At worst if it was made, a forum would be made, not used and deleted, no big deal.

Just so we're on the same page. Me commenting on someone saying something = rude. You commenting on me saying something = totally ok.

        Cool.

There are a lot of things I should do. Your ideas in that area, however, aren't that important to me.

So, the fact that we already have 7 non-FFXI related forums on a FFXI site, and the fact that none of those 7 are particularly busy means that we should totally add more? Ok.

          Re: News/Debate forum?

Actually, I'm a bit more concerned about aesthetics when I see that giant list of servers. But when I see the job and guild forums, they have the subforums neat and compacted right underneath the header. Perhaps a "specific server talk" forum should be made and all specific forums listed under it. But I don't know if you have some data space or bandwidth issues with that.

Our server specific forums are so rarely used, I wonder if they should just be removed entirely. The FFXIO userbase is like one cohesive community. Even when subcultures try to take root here like in the alla exodus, they don't really seem to thrive. For server specific topics you're probably better served at alla or possibly KI.

                The server forums at Alla scare me. >.>;

                But yeah, what Taskmage said.

edit: I'm kind of my own subculture of awesome.

Hey! I was a part of that exodus! >_<

Anyhow, mashing all the server forums together sounds good. Just make make people put a <server> tag as first word in the subject, and the place would look less cluttered.

I guess it was the people that were interested in segregating themselves that left, whereas the others just became part of the family. The only person I remember as being "from alla" is Feba.

Who? The Nazi's? I for one welcome our Nazi forum mod overlords.

Just make make people put a <server> tag as first word in the subject
Would never happen. Again, people have a problem putting topics in the form of a question in the Ask SE forum.

                              Re: News/Debate forum?

If we have some decent coders here, there could be a prompt requiring that a thread maker specify what thread he is referring to. And that specification could be the subtext for the topic title.

But since subforums seem to be such a good solution, we could probably make divisions in the off-topic section for things like miscellaneous, news/debate, spam, etc.

And picture gallery could be listed in off-topic, as it's not directly related to FFXI.

if you look at that little triangle icon on the top right of every "group" you can use that to hide the sub-forums. case in point, you can use this to minimize the server forums for less clutter (it's what i do )
