Rep Power=Look at Icemages post.

The gil is used to play site RPG, and use in the Site store!

The site RPG is quite fun to play (while at work shhhhh)

I think the rep. power is so people can tell at a glance how knowledgeable you are. But it's sort of misleading, since you get 1 point on it for every 100 posts... It could just be a loud idiot talking. >_>a

The gil is so you can buy things like a colored name as well as used in the RPG game on this website. You can check it out by clicking the "Store and RPG" near the top of the page.

Reputation power also impacts how much you affect other users' ratings when you rate them up or down due to especially good/bad posts. Users with high Reputation can lift or lower someone else's reputation quite a lot more than someone with low Reputation (and if you have 0 Reputation Power, you can't affect other people at all, either negatively or positively).

In addition, Reputation power affects how easy it is for other forum users to use the Thief ability to steal forum gil from you. The higher your rating, the harder it is to steal from you (and a warning to those who don't know, using the Thief ability always lowers your Reputation rating, whether you succeed or fail).

Forum gil can also be used to purchase perks, like colors in your name, on the left, and custom titles. The the Store Menu above to find out more about what you can buy, and how much it costs.

Even if I do land a million gil, my rep power will shoot from 14 to -100.

Oh, while we're all stickied and stuff now.... I guess I should ask a question about a related topic. How do you get multiple green/red bars. The ones located right below "Rep Power: #" on posts.

It used to be whoever donates gil to other people. This was quite a loophole that was exploited by me and Rones. We just donated back and forth, and Voila! I have 8 green bars.

However, now I don't know how to obtain green bars other than the fact that other people rate you up for posting. I'm guessing, the more people that rate you up, the closer you are to obtaining another green bar. (it may be faster or slower, depending on the person that rates you up and down)

Hell, he who shall not be named went from 13 rep and a green bar to 0 rep and a red bar, so rating up and down do have an influence on your bars.

And....the only way to receive a shitload of red bars is to steal repeatedly.

Yeah, rating posts up gives you more bars. Afaik its the only way to get more rep points. I'm not sure if rate ups raise your rep power, but rate downs definately lower it. For every 100 rep points you have, you get another green dot.
