Suggestion for Quest and Mission DB
The current database that outlines quests and missions is somewhat lacking in depth. While that might change with the impending release of the English version of FFXI, it still has its problems. For instance some quests or missions have different strategies for completion. These strategies can vary by level, job, etc. Also, posting the different strategies in the database can be time consuming and make the list incredibly long. To solve this there is the “Quests Q&A” and the “Missions Q&A” forums, but these can be counterproductive as well. For instance, many people will post questions on quests despite the fact that there is already a topic on it. These problems will likely increase once the English version is released.
What can be done to solve this problem? The database and “Q&A” forums should be removed. In there place, there could be a group of forums devoted to the missions and quests of each individual city. For example there would be a “Bastok Quests” forum, a “Windurst Quests” forum, a “Bastok Missions” forum, etc. However, this would not be like the “Q&A” forums. These forums would only allow moderators and administrators to create topics. This would keep people from asking questions that have already been answered. Each topic’s subject line would be the name of the mission. This allows readers to easily find the information that they need.
While the creation of topics is limited to moderators and administrators, the replying is not. The first post in the topic would contain the mission information, which NPC gives it, where the NPC is located, etc. Then the rest of the thread would be devoted to people posting how to complete the quest or mission. This allows for people to post alternate strategies or perhaps discuss the best way to complete it. That way, players who have trouble completing a quest or mission can try different methods. This would cut down on the excess posting of quest and mission questions.
With so many quests, the moderators won’t be able to have every one posted right away. To solve this, another forum for requests would have to be created. The request forum would allow people to request the addition of a certain quest. Once the requested quest has an appropriate topic, the moderator can close its topic in the request forum. Eventually, every mission and almost every single quest would have a topic and answers. However, there would need to be at least one or two moderators that specifically handle this area of the site, but there shouldn’t be much of a problem finding capable people to handle this.
If this forum section was created, FFXIOnline.com would have the largest and most used list for completing quests and missions. This would be better than any strategy guide or document of GameFAQs.com, because they usually only include one or two ways for completing the quest or mission. With this new area of the site, FFXIOnline.com would solidify its position as the most comprehensive Final Fantasy XI site on the internet.
I understand that you guys are busy attempting to improve the speed of the site and prepare it for the increased traffic once the English version is released, so if you need additional help outlining and organizing this idea, I’m always willing to help. I also have a few more ideas on the implementation of this, so if this idea does interest you, let me know.
