How did you fix it o.O?
I remember my website had similar problem caused by the PHP's function removeSpecialChar() or something like that. But in that case all japanese characters would show as ascii code which look kinda like this #$1232 #!3424 .There are painters who transform the sun into a yellow spot,

in case of vbulletin, I had censor option on where it stripped blank ascii and multi-byte character codes. I just simply edited it out.
