  • New player looking for good server and LS

    HI all

Im new to FFXI and i am looking for a server that is nicely populated and hopefully get invited into a nice LS in which could show me the ropes. I come from Everquest II, and i never played FFXI before i played Final Fantasy Series but other than that on the console i never played this game before. I am really looking for a nice server that i can call home and an LS that isnt so caught up in just getting to 75 that they dont lend a hand when they can, as everquest II guilds were more about endgame content and not about helping their fellow members who were at a lower level.

I also had a question in which i did some research on and still need to ask this... i hear that the AH prices range from server to server, why then according to my readings do things like crystal stacks ( main money maker for a newbie) hardly sell. I had a friend who recently quit because of how mundane this game became for him. I am signed up but i havent started a character yet cause i would like to have someone show me a little bit of the ropes and help me along i am planning on a WHM and of course i guess that is a bad decision because if things dont sell on the AH im up the creek without a paddle. So i hope that i can find a nice LS to show me the ropes and help me along the way ...

Well, things will sell on the AH but there are other ways of making some minor gil. Depending on your starting city, there are quests you can do using items that drop from mobs, and they will usually net you 100-500 gil. It's chump change, really, but even if things aren't selling you have that avenue of approach.

I'm really only familiar with my own LS on Hades so I don't know how others are, but I don't think everyone is always concerned with endgame. My LS has a good mix of players from about the 20's to 75, and I find some weeks that I'm helping others more than I'm doing my own thing, so I guess if you were to join up with us you wouldn't need to worry about that.

My best bit of advice as a starting mage is to NOT buy your scrolls for spells at the Auction House. Get them at the local spell merchant. Most of the time this will save you gil. You should always check local merchants before you buy at the AH anyway, and that really goes for just about anything you want to purchase.

Not sure why your friend was having trouble selling crystals, possibly he/she wasn't checking current prices and such, I have never had a problem selling crystals on Hades, they are a basic staple all crafters need, that being said certain crystals sell faster than others in certain starting cities. You should probably spend the first 10 levels playing solo, to establish some cash and get the feel of the game mechanics. Even if you are set on being a WHM I would recomened soloing ALL starting jobs to 10 to start with this will A) let you build up you bank role, B) let you expierience each job (you may find out you like something else better than WHM) C) give you a better understanding of the strengths and weaknesses of each job which can help you when playing WHM and D) set you up for you sub job when available. Once you get going you will want to lvl all jobs to 15 then eventually to 37, doing this at the same time means not having to carry around multiple sets of equipment for different lvl groups or purchasing selling and repurchasing.

Leveling all jobs simultaneously.. that would tax a begining player's finances too much, I think.

But, the concept is a good idea. For instance, if someone decided to level WHM & BLM - those are two jobs that have a good amount of overlap in items. Myself, I probably would have been better off to have traded off between leveling THF & BRD for the same reason).

I'm imagine Tarumaru has gotten some progress, by now - if not, I do know some people in Gilgamesh (but PM - I'd rather not put up names w/o permission)
