  • Sever Hopping / Restricted Server Entry

Today I was sever hopping around to get to Titan and I began to wonder...

Does SE restrict access to some servers due to population?

I know Ragnarok has high pop and thus, it's highly unlikely I'll get lucky and end up on Ragnarok if don't use a WP.

I sever hopped for about 3 hours and ended up only on

    Bismark
    Cerberus
    Diabolos
    Fairy
    Fenrur
    Garuda
    Gilgamesh
    Lakshmi
    Pandemonium
    Seraph
    Sylph
    Unicorn
    Valefor

Thats it so far. I can taste Titan. Hopefully its not locked for non-WP entry.

Yes they do. If they deem a server to be "full", you can no longer be put on that server randomly.

Just don't go to Fairly and you're fine.

Re: Sever Hopping / Restricted Server Entry

few hours later; i landed on Titan^^!

          lol.

I began to land on additional servers to the ones I listed above.

          :update:

          Hades
          Shiva
          Ramuh
          Carbunkle

So if anyone doesn't have WP to those servers, all I can say is keep trying and you'll land on one of those in due time

*Make a fake name like "adswiaj" so you can land on all avaiable servers. If you use a name such as "Ichimaru" only one server DOESNT have an Ichimaru which is Bismark (I didn't) and you'll only land on only Bismark. Just make another char once you land on your server and delete the fake named one.

Re: Sever Hopping / Restricted Server Entry

It is likely that SE can restrict a Server so it doesn't gain any more players on it, but also for general setup most of the server restrictions you end up encountering is likely do to just a network Load and Balance calculation.

More advanced networks use a load and balance calculation, what it does is measure a value of each connection (Value is were they can enforce restirctions, a connection with a high Value will likely only get sessions were the source must go to). The balance part measures how much traffic is on each connection, it considers each connection as going to the same source. So to improve overall speed between everyone it tries to equal out the sessions among all the connections that are currently active.

It's that design that'll likely bounce you around to certain servers more often then other servers. For visual example here is one:

Considering all Connections are Value 1000 (Equal Value, Example of Balancing):
            Fairy (3,231 connections)
            Seraph (4,282 connections)
            Ragnarock (3,229 connections)
            Diabolos (3,230 connections)

            3 incoming connections:

            1st connection assigned to Ragnarock
2nd connection randomly assigned to Ragnarock and Diabolos
3rd connection assigned to Ragnarock or Diabolos (Valued on which the 2nd enters 3rd will go to the other one)

Now example of Value, say out of a miracle the incoming sessions and sessions ending remain equal:

            Fairy (Value 4000, 2,000 connections)
            Seraph (Value 2000, 2,000 connections)
            Ragnarock (Value 1500, 2,000 connections)
            Diabolos (Value 1500, 2,000 connections)

            5,000 incoming connections (New ofcourse):

2,000 assigned to Diabolos and Ragnarock
            1,000 asigned to Seraph

It basically assigns in an incrementing scale, Ragnarock and Diabolos considered the lowest Value so pushes 4,000 of the connections to them. Now scale wise connections to value Ragnarock and Diabolos has gone to high, the new lowest is Seraph so it assigns the rest to Seraph making it look like:

            Fairy (Value 4000, 2000 connections)
            Seraph (Value 2000, 3000 connections)
            Ragnarock (Value 1500, 4000 connections)
            Diabolos (Value 1500, 4000 connections)

At this point any new character creation connections would go randomly to Seraph, Ragnarock, or Diabolos. If it happens to land on Seraph then 2 more connections to Ragnarock and 2 more connections to Diabolos would have to come in for it to pick randomly between the 3 again. The more usual occurence though is if comes to this 3 way tie then Ragnarock and Diabolos both get 1 first before giving Seraph 1. Then it'll go to Ragnarock and Diabolos randomly again.

That's a simplistic breakdown of how it is designed. There is a lot more checks and balances that change the result. This leads to basically 2 choices for the players, you can force your way onto a server but you should never complain about connection or DCs then. Or create your initial character during a time that you will be playing most often and accept the server it assigns you to (Not to be done at low points such as a holiday for example were it's likely fewer will be on).

If you create your initial character during the time you play often and during when the average playerbase that plays in that timeframe is likely to be present, then the assigned server is the most likely stable server for your play. This means DCs, latencies, and other errors should remain at a minimum for you (At least for a while, effeciency changes with other players that force their way into your server or as the quantity of players increase).
