On fairy in the last 2 days the Emp pin has shot up from 3 million to 6 million. Has anyone else on any other servers seen a sudden and huge upswing in the cost of this thing? I thought when I payed 1 million for it earlier that it was a little much. 6 million is just ridiculous. Though, if and when it hits 10 I'll be more than happy to camp for the rare/ex version and sell mine for an Ebow.

In this state of FFXI economy, does it make it impossible for new players to start? I just started my character after a few years break, last night. He's a WHM TaruTaru on Quez server.
The economy has changed a lot since this old post that you dug up.
SE is monitoring the economy now since their patch in Feb. and have stated they will make adjustments to the game where needed to resolve price controlling and over inflation.
but no, it's not impossible for a new player. you just have to do a bit more work. i made 100k in about 2 days playing the AH between the 3 cities when I started over.
remember to buy items from npc stores when possible (it's usually cheaper than the ah... usually), and pay attention to the prices of things especially when buying from the ah.
i'm not saying you can't play, all i'm saying is be careful when buying/selling things.
ionia of Cait Sith! 75 RDM, 75 THF Plotting World Domination and doing silly emotes on a server probably not near you! I live to entertain!
The main pieces of advice I would give to a new player, aside from the above:
1. Get Signet all the time. Get to Rank 2 so it lasts longer (you can solo most Rank 1 missions at level 10 or below). At level 25, start looking for people to get to Rank 3 with (there's a level 25 cap boss fight at the end of M2-3 for every nation). Crystals are a major source of income at low levels. Conquest gear can be pretty good too.
2. Don't craft at a loss if you are already poor. If you want to craft, but can't find any way to do so without losing money - wait until you are higher level and can make enough money to support a crafting habit and/or farm a significant amount of your own materials to reduce costs. Some people claim that you can lose money skilling up and then magically hit big profits - even if this is true, a low level character isn't getting over that hump in a reasonable amount of time. It's probably better to leave crafting to people with at least one high level job to make money and/or farm ingredients - so if you really want to pursue it yourself, consider leveling THF to 45 (or higher).
3. Beware of overspending on luxuries. HQ items aren't necessary. NM/BCNM drops aren't necessary at lower levels. This doesn't mean you should disregard gear entirely, but look at the price vs. performance and don't pay a lot for only slightly better stuff. It's generally better to have pretty good gear all over than to spend everything on one really expensive item and be poorly equipped elsewhere. In any case, high-end gear doesn't make *that* much difference in your performance compared to pretty good gear, especially at low levels. Low level characters usually shouldn't use the same foods as high level characters (which are quite expensive).
If you are careful with your money you can generally keep yourself in reasonably good gear without too much effort, at the lower levels. 50+ it may become more difficult, but you also have more ways of making money at that point. Inflation didn't affect this much because the stuff you sell and the stuff you buy are both going up at about the same rate.
i'm on Asura and it is getting outrageous. I'm Just now getting into Alchemy , only way i keep cash is silent potions etc etc. Although i think someone mis priced a shade harness for 10k instead of 100k so i made 90k off that.
yea i moved from asura to seraph, asura is just crazy w/ AH prices
and seraph is gettin there... not quite there yet tho.
