  • GM's Talk about Drop rates and thf

While reading Linaaa's lovely journal I happened upon this interesting little conversation she had with a GM.

Thanks go to Linaaa for posting it.

So the question is the GM talking out of his ass or is this true?

    Interesting none the less.

easy test using a different thf ability
kill some gil dropper (such as a NM which often drops a set amount of gil).
    Attack with thief
    Attack without thief

gilfinder bonus only kicks in when thief attacks

    that's my opinion on it...
Still trying to play way too much...

That is correct. Gil finder does not help in a party.
      TH, however, is different.

I personally don't think THF attacking the monster has any bearing on whether or not TH kicks in. It probably does matter if you're in a party and you're not within range to receive exp though (just using common sense, but who knows, maybe it does still work).

Anyways, thanks for the post, its nice to get info from a GM about this, even if the GM *may* be wrong, he still probably knows a lot more than the average joe saying that INT affects TH or something.

I dunno if I'm interpreting part of this wrong but, I think he's saying that when you kill monster, there isn't just one chance the monster has the item. It's a chance for every person who helped kill it. So instead of soloing something and getting 1 chance for it, if an alliance killed it there are 18 chances for it to drop. This make sense to anyone?

Yeah, that's the way I took it. It makes sense, because I remember seeing like 3-4 lizard skins drop pretty consistently in the dunes before in party. When soloing as a THF with TH1, I consistently seem to get only 1 lizard skin. It's probably different for rares though.

I think every item has a cap on how many can drop. Every player gets a chance at making an item drop, but once one drops, no more can drop no matter how many people you have, unless the item has a higher limit than one per mob. Otherwise you could get ridiculous ammounts of drops from single mobs when killing in an alliance and everyone would farm in an alliance.

On a semi-related note, has anyone ever had a player drop at the end of a BCNM, and open the chest only to recieve 5 items instead of the usual 6? It may have just been unusually bad luck, but it happened once.

Once my PT got 0 items from a BCNM, but then again, we were trying to force erase to drop. We had almost ever rare that could drop and sucked. All we got was 6k gil . . .

Wait so TH only works for non rare/ex items right?

I've heard that but never been able to confirm it. I just assume its true until someone proves it otherwise.

A LS-mate of mine spoke with a GM about this same exact thing and the GM said that TH helps with every item, including rare, ex and rare/ex. I was very surprised, but Occam's Razor says that this is most likely.

According to his discussion, TH simply adds on a certain amount of chance for rarer items on top of the inherent chance. So, for the same reason you get more items in an alliance than solo you get more, rarer items when you have a THF present in your PT.
                          There will be cake.

I've also read somewhere (I think FFXIO?) that level takes effect during item drop chances. For example, let's say there's a level10 Taru BLM (Bob), and a level58 Taru BLM (Tato). If they both killed 100 Crawlers in Sarutabaruta, chances are... Bob will get more Silk Threads, because the monster (Crawler) is more into Bob's level range.
This means, I need to level another job to 30+~ for farming at Valkurm, 'cause 58BLM killing Hill Lizards isn't gonna do it.

I think so too, I've known people in my old LS that hunts for that Mist Silk Cape, he was level 25 or something, then when a level 11 player was going to Windurst for the first time and killed that NM he got the Cape on the first try!
