Re: D&D Related Webcomics and Media

This actually sums up how I feel about the MLP fandom when everyone gives random background ponies that are really only there as part of the scene full backstories:

(Originally I was going to post this in the MLP thread but most of the Bronies on the forum read this section anyway so meh:

Well, I don't think The Hand said much of anything and we still thought he was a pretty cool guy.

Well The Hand was a fun Boss Fight. The Blue Pony with the Belgian accent (I think it's Belgian anyway, there's a Belgian guy in my gaming group that sounds like that) only said one line and is basically supposed to just be there for one scene, that is what I was poking fun at (and was what the author was likely trying to make fun of too).

I don't know about that. Google "Green Biker Dude." Most games either have underdeveloped worlds (e.g. Mega Man, where screen time for characters other than X or Zero is rare) or are populated by mass amounts of generic NPCs, and that's conditioned us to take the appearance of any NPC (in the former case) or a slightly unusual NPC (in the latter case) as a pretty big deal even when it isn't.

A lot of the background characters in MLP that have big followings are unusual in some way or another. The spa twins, DJ Pon3, Octavia and Nurse Redheart either have unique character models or they're barely ever cloned. Lyra got popular because of her human-like sitting pose. It's no surprise this guy made waves in the fandom either, however brief it may have been.

The Hand didn't have to say anything, he was just a really cool character design and a fun encounter.

I agree with Cid, The Hand was a fun encounter and had a really cool character design.

I was personally poking fun at the MLP fandom taking every minor character and given them all massive backstories. It doesn't bug me, I just find it amusing.

A good D&D player knows there is a fine line between "meta-gaming" and "fast talking the DM into letting you do whatever you want"

I actually did this in a Campaign once

It was a Custom Campaign and System based on the Final Fantasy Tactics world, and my White Mage bypassed a boss fight by just nuking the boss with Holy before he could finish his motivation rant when my character questioned him.

The DM had a dramatic climax to an investigation set up where one of us would corner a serial killer and try to hold off the killer or keep him talking until the rest of the party got there. The DM balanced the Killer's HP for each character and because my White Mage was mostly a supportive character, he set the HP a bit too low. Low enough for her to one shot the guy with a max damage Holy roll plus a crit, putting him to -1 HP.

Result: Captured Serial Killer, the Story Arc's XP coming early because the Killer was supposed to escape, and my White Mage's alignment shifted from Neutral Good to Chaotic Good (She developed a bit of a reputation for using Chaotic means to achieve Lawful ends and had already shifted from her original Lawful Good to Neutral Good).

The Roleplay and responses of the other players after it was one of the funniest moments I've ever Roleplayed as a gamer. The party did also learn not to piss off my White Mage since the could theoretically one shot everyone but the Dragoon .

It has come to my attention that the 4E PhB features "Generic" characters who appear on various pages to illustrate the entirety of the book. Now this in and of itself isn't news. They do that on every edition... but what's really pretty funny is that the "Generic Party" from 4E is almost our group... ALMOST. You'll see what I mean.

And he has either horns... or 10 sets of eyebrows. I can't quite tell.

Found another one featuring the whole party. So it's not a spear... it's a bow. They're not eyebrows... they are indeed horns. Also: Vince is a chick with a badass serpent tail.

Those are horns. Tieflings in 4th Edition look FAR more demonic.

I actually have all of the 4th Edition sourcebooks and copies of them in PDF format (for those who are curious). Some of the races and appearances are really out there.

Gnomes and Halflings look identical, Deva are now blue, it is entirely possible to roleplay a Warforged that is basically an human looking android, Humans, Pixies and Revenants break the fucking game in half, and Minotaurs are for some reason playable characters.
