  • Re: D&D

Well. The wife works on Saturdays from 3:00pm - 8:00pm and I typically pick her up and drop her off. That being said... I will likely have the day free if you guys were available... but we'll have to play it by ear and see how things go until then. I don't want to make any false psomises until I know for sure that she's gotten her shedule for this week. If she's off and I agree to run the game... thats when I'll be lynched.

Although this may all be a moot point if Cid is going out to what sounds like a really awesome exibit. I'm actually quite jealous of how cool that sounds.

If you have the day off or can work around it, cid... I'll consider making this week happen. If you cant, we'll just keep to our regular shedule and play next week.

Incidently... it's funny you mention that. I have this upcoming wednesday(?) to myself because my mother is taking her and my brother's girlfriend out to see Magic Mike.

I can't remember if we're crashing the Smithsonian on Saturday or Sunday. I think it's Sunday but I have to double check.

P.S. You should be extra jealous because I can get to it entirely on foot. No D.C. traffic for me suckers!

Starship Troopers the movie is what you expected the book to be after reading the first chapter. Then the book took a sharp turn and turned into a moral treatise. Imo, they are both great but comparison between the two is meaningless. You might as well compare a hamburger to Hamburg. They're completely different things. They just share a name.

If you enjoyed either, though, you should definitely check out Old Man's War and The Ghost Brigades by John Scalzi.

Yyg, rule technicality question. Suppose me, Enemy1, Lily, and Enemy2 are all adjacent to each other, in a straight line, in that order. I.e.

              -------------------------------
              | Me | Enemy1 | Lily | Enemy2 |
              -------------------------------

During my turn I successfully grapple Enemy1. Can Lily Sneak Attack Enemy1? In order to Sneak Attack, the enemy must be A) unable to use its DEX bonus or B) being flanked by Lily. Grappling does NOT deny Enemy1's DEX bonus so criteria A fails.

The rules of flanking say you're flanking an opponent if an ally on the opposite side of the opponent threatens it. The definition of a threatened square is one into which you can make a melee attack. As the person controlling the grapple, if I don't release the grapple (free action), I MUST continue to grapple. Since I can only release the grapple during my turn, I can't make a melee attack into the enemy's square during Lily's turn. Therefore, I don't threaten the enemy, and Lily is not flanking, so no Sneak Attack. Do you agree with the rules as written?

On the other hand, as the person being grappled, Enemy1 IS free to attack into adjacent spaces assuming the attack only requires one hand. So although he can't make attacks of opportunity (part of the definition of being grappled), he CAN attack and DOES threaten. Therefore, Enemy2 is flanking Lily. Likewise, if Enemy1 were to make a roll during his turn and reverse the grapple, I'd be free to make one-handed attacks against him and Lily would flank and thus Sneak Attack. Do you agree?

I ask because you seem to have your own house rules for flanking and sneak attacks based on where the enemy's attention is at the time, whereas in D&D's written rules it doesn't matter who's facing which direction; if you're "behind" the enemy, it can still AoO you should you move away, and you're not considered to be sneak attacking it unless an ally is in front of it.
