  • Re: D&D

I wouldn't want to suck on something I've been using as a cloak, sail, gas mask, blanket, sleeping bag and weapon. So I suppose it's a good thing my beard is none of that.

We'll see how long that lasts.

Caveat about combat tactics, Armando: Halflings are slow, thanks to their short legs, and can only move 2/3 as far as races of normal height. I'll have armor encumbrance adding to that until warrior level 3 (which will probably be the 4th level I get) so I might only be able to move forward at half your speed.

Wait, hang on. I looked it up and dwarves are slow, too, so there won't be that big of a difference in our movement rates.

Yeah. I don't get slowed by armor though, so I still get 20 feet of movement, which is as fast as Human in heavy armor would.

Also the reason I picked Tower Shield Proficiency instead of Saving Shield is that I assumed we wouldn't be adjacent to each other if we're targeting the same mob. But if you have a 10-foot weapon I would reconsider that decision. EDIT: Then again, if the mob is on you then it's out of my reach since I don't have a 10 foot weapon.

Some item-related questions for the more experienced players: What is the difference between simple, martial, and exotic weapons? How do a calculate my total attack bonus with a given weapon? How much do I need to spend on a pack, bedroll and basic camping gear? I don't see mundane non-equippable items listed anywhere. Also, I read that my sling has a penalty when using improvised ammo like rocks I find lying around, so I'd like to keep 3-5 heavy, polished, balanced stones with me to use with it. Do I need to pay for that, how much, and what weight should I assign them?

I think diagonals still count as adjacent. At least I'm pretty sure you can make attacks of opportunity against targets in the 8 squares around you. My sling-staff does have a 10 ft reach when used as a melee weapon, but I only expect to use it if I get rushed after making a ranged attack and can't draw my sword without provoking an oppy.

As far as I can tell there's nothing inherently different between a Simple Weapon, Martial Weapon and Exotic Weapon with identical stats except whether you're proficient or not, which depends on your feats (being a Fighter you already have Simple and Martial weapon proficiencies.) And the stats between Simple and Martial weapons didn't seem all that different to me. If you're not proficient, -4 to your Attack roll, sucks to be you. Your damage is simply your weapon's dice + Your Base Attack Bonus from your class + STR mod + Size mod (+1 since you're tiny) if I remember right.

If anyone could confirm whether diagonals count towards using Saving Shield that'd be nice. I think my AC is pretty good so dropping it by 2 to be able to boost others' AC by 2 sounds like a good deal to me.

Ok, so mainly the difference is I would get a penalty with them if I wasn't proficient. Gotcha.

Actually the positioning thing might be a non-issue since we can always take a 5-foot-step in combat. Even if the diagonals don't count there's nothing stopping you from attacking and then moving directly adjacent to me or vice-versa.

You pretty much summed it up. Usually it's best to work out what you would like to use and check what feats support it as well. A lot of weapons have similar stats purely for customisation reasons really.

Basically, everyone can use a simple weapon (unless your cless specifically restricts it) while martial weapons tend to require class/race proficiencies to represent the fact that they need training to use well. Exotic weapons are just that: Exotic weapons that may or may not be better than Simple or Martial that almost always need a feat or class/race proficiency to represent that you will need specialised training to use one.

Usually you can treat exotic weapons with your race's name in it as a martial weapon. My character can treat the Elven Curveblade as a Martial Weapon (though as a Rogue will still need a feat to equip without penalty it anyway since Rogues can't use all martial weapons). So if you are playing a Dwarf, every weapon with "Dwarven" in the name is classed as a martial weapon so can be used without a feat if your class can use all martial weapons.

Basically unless you have a very specific combat build in mind, it is always best to go with what you find more fun to use or what weapon suits your character the most. Damage die is not always the best way to look at a weapon's stats.

Not at all. The martial classes: Barbarian, Fighter, Ranger and Rogue all have excellent synergy and have very useful talents. A lot of Rogue talents for example are out of combat talents and are very useful for skill checks.

No lectures on hygiene. I prefer to merely lead by example. Graeme isn't much of a lecturer at all, honestly. He grew up in what was once a noble house, so he's at least casually aware of bathing. Mostly, his deity (unleess I change it), requires a modicum of cleanliness.

Had to change one Feat, as one is a pre-req for what I actually want. I'll be looking into combat feats, and reading up on the combat system this evening.

Okay, finally got all transferred over to myth weavers, and filled in most of the gaps on my character sheet.

                        Kal
Male True Neutral Halfling Fighter, Level 1, Init +3, HP 12/12, Speed 20
                        AC 21, Touch 14, Flat-footed 18, Fort +3, Ref +4, Will +2, Base Attack Bonus 0
                        Scimitar +2 (1d4, 18-20/x2)
                        Halfling Sling-staff (ranged) +4 (1d6, x3)
                        Halfling Sling-staff (melee) +2 (1d4, x2)
Scale mail, Heavy wooden shield (+5 Armor, +2 Shield, +3 Dex, +1 Size)
                        Abilities Str 12, Dex 16, Con 14, Int 10, Wis 12, Cha 14
                        Condition None

I still have my question about ammo for my sling staff. Also, Yyg, pre-campaign I want to take my +5 survival modifier and my sling staff and go hunting to put some meat in my pack I don't have to pay for. I'm hoping to brain a turkey. Want me to roll something?

Btw, salt is way too effing expensive. 5 gp a pound? Dear god. I wanted to cure some of this meat.

Gonna change my shield to a Heavy Steel Shield and trade Tower Shield Proficiency for Saving Shield. I'm pretty sure that saves me some GP too, but I can't look at the item list right now to go grocery shopping because I'm at work. I also don't have a name for my character because I'm terrible at that. But otherwise I'm pretty sure my character is set.

I do plan to add a proper character description, but as far as game mechanics stand I'm good to go.
