    Re: Sony Basically gives up on First Party support for the Vita

    First thing: MMORPGs aside, I assumed "early access" and "kickstart" games are usually those you buy while the development is still in alpha stages. Let me know if that's wrong... lol.

Each early access purchase is functionally a lost sale at release. Nobody is going to buy a game they already own at full price, they just don't do it. So how else do you make your development, marketing and publishing costs back? Especially with Kickstarter where you may well be throwing in extra merchandise that you could have sold separately. Both of these things have killed devs jumping on this Gold Rush bandwagon.
    I think this implies my assumption doesn't hold; this form of early access purchase doesn't include the final product?

    Even in that case, keep in mind that early money means the devs have to borrow less money to keep develop the game. That's saving money--as well as saving energy needed to find more investors or beg publishers for more money. Generally speaking, early money is worth more than later money of the same amount.

    He's annoying, that's all.

    There's only been one kickstart game I've seriously looked into (as in, read most of the page): https://www.kickstarter.com/projects...alf-genie-hero

    One thing I came away thinking: It doesn't matter how many people 'pledged' or the average amount 'pledged' per person. As long as the total amount of money gathered is enough to finish the game, the dev already solved one of the hardest problem for indie game studios--how the heck to pay for the development to without taking out a second mortgage on the house and/or dip into emergency savings and/or ran the credit cards to the limits.

    yet not a mote of dust is stirred;
    Moonlight pierces the depths of the pond,
    leaving no trace in the water.

      LAN based D2 was what we used exclusively back in college. It let us use edited characters so people could hop in halfway through the game instead of just being left out. It also meant we had a significantly better chance of dodging crippling lag from all the goddamn skeleton minions we had on screen at any given moment.

      Internet requirements on any game that isn't an MMO are bullshit. I don't know why you'd try to argue otherwise Mal. If a company does a thing that hurts consumers it's ok to call them out on it. Really. That's the only way we have a chance of getting said company to correct its mistakes.

        I never actually defended the approach FYI I just said I understand why Blizzard's doing it and it seems to be going that way & that it doesn't bother me all that much at least with regards to their games. The only exception to that is with the campaigns for Starcraft 2, but I generally play 'em once, then a 2nd time to finish achievement hunting and after that I don't care.

        Again I'm NOT ADVOCATING IT, only saying it doesn't bother me as much as it might others.

            Fat Princess: Piece of Cake is out now on iOS in Canada - Destructoid

            Oh, but rest assured, it will come to Vita later this year.

            Not that I'd want it, but now I'm left wondering if Sony even understands any market they're in now or if they're just throwing things out there and hoping it sticks. That any Sony made game would get priority for iOS is intellectually offensive no matter how much short-term sense it makes.

            It just makes PS4 look like a fluke and their indie talk look insincere when they engage in the gold rush mentality that indies came to them, Nintendo and other platforms to get away from.
