  • Capcom could go on sale.

Gamasutra - Capcom shareholders open company up to takeover possibility

I know this is the kind of thing where people start posting fantasies about Sony or Nintendo buyouts, but there's just so much IP here I don't think its realistic. Lots of IP would languish under either. When you think about it, Capcom has an IP catalog that rivals Nintendo, Sony, Sega, Square-Enix and outmatches many other third parties and Microsoft.

I think IP and property/studio selloffs are more realistic here. I wouldn't envy the burden of any company that took that entire catalog and added it to their own. It would be chaos. A world where Nintendo had Megaman and Monster Hunter and Sony got Resident Evil and Devil May Cry feels more feasable to me.

Best hope would be for Sega or Square Enix as they are pretty well known for not messing with studios and letting them do their own thing. SE also have Eidos who are great at putting out good PC versions of games. Look at DXHR, Tomb Raider and more recently Thief, the PC versions run great and at 60FPS which is what you want for action games (which most of Capcom's games are).

Ubi-Soft would actually be interesting too since they do have the financial backing to attempt that to snag some IPs.

As much as I would like to see Nintendo turn around, and more of those IPs on the Wii U would help them a lot in both the US and at home, I really don't want to see any of Sony, Microsoft or Nintendo acquire any of those IPs.

More likely purchaser: Tencent or GungHo.

Capcom's investors are basically showing a vote of no confidence in the management direction (which they should because we, as gamers, have known that Capcom management have been idiots for years). The company is still solvent, but it's not growing or particularly profitable, and that's making the investors antsy.

Re: Capcom could go on sale.

I second SEGA or SE buying them. It's not that Capcom's franchises are bad, they've just been mismanaged so poorly that the fans are giving up on them.

To that end, I don't think Nintendo would be ideal either - they're basically the Kings of re-hashing old IPs. If only we could get the old RE teams and Team Silent under one roof, we could get the ultimate survival horror game (whatever happened to those guys after they left Konami anyway?)

Just as long as it isn't EA or Activision that gobbles them up, though I doubt very much that would happen given they are American companies and this is Japan we're talking about. For the same reasons, I don't think Ubisoft would get them either - basically no foreign national sales.

GungHo wouldn't be a bad move. Get Suda51 to write the next DMC and have Grasshopper collaborate with Platinum games to make it.

            ^ that'd be awesome.

To be fair, Ninja Theory did a surprisingly good job with DmC as far as the combat went.

            Everything was was trash sadly.

You can't give credit to Ninja Theory for the combat in DmC. They got coached on the combat from the Capcom DMC staff. Left to their own devices, Ninja Theory produces stupendously bad combat mechanics (see: Enslaved, Heavenly Sword).

Oh really? Because that's what I was initially expecting but then it turned out to be good so I figured they finally got their act together.
