  • Humble Bundle to begin gouging UK customers.

Video game store Humble Bundle announced that the Humble Store has switched to more traditional Steam-like prices, with different prices depending on your region. European customers will have to pay more for some games if the publisher chooses to set higher prices in Europe.
Humble Bundle is mostly known for its Humble Indie Bundles and smaller weekly bundles. So far, Humble Bundle has mostly been about indie games. Even though the company released a couple of bundles with major publishers like EA, small developers and publishers are still on center stage. Similarly, the company has started experimenting with ebook and audio book bundles.
Backed by Y Combinator and SV Angel, the startup recently opened the Humble Store, a more traditional store that allows you to purchase individual games just like you would on Steam or gog.com.
The Humble Store has had compelling arguments to seduce gamers. Most games are cross-platform, DRM-free and come with a Steam key to activate the game on Steam. Moreover, charities, such as the American Red Cross, Child’s Play Charity, the Electronic Frontier Foundation, World Land Trust and Charity Water, receive 10 percent of the proceedings — Humble Bundle keeps 15 percent.
But one of the key differentiating element was also pricing. Everything was in USD, so you knew that you wouldn’t have to pay 20 or 30 percent more because of price differences between regions like on competing platforms. If your bank account wasn’t in USD, PayPal is pretty good at providing a good conversion rate.
Now, there are two scenarios. If Humble Bundle handles the conversion, it will sell the game at the same price in USD, EUR or GBP, without adding any VAT. But if the publisher wants to set different prices, the company will let the publisher do so. Like on Steam, there is apparently no way to choose your currency, so European customers will sometimes be forced to pay more for the same game. Many publishers could now choose to set the same prices in USD, EUR and GBP on the Humble Store and Steam.
For now, the Humble Store only added Euro and British Pound. If you don’t live in a country that accepts these currencies, you will still pay in U.S. dollars. The big bundles and the weekly bundles will still work the same way — everything will be in USD.

So basically UK and EU customers are forces to pay in GBP or Euros on their store. Due to the exchange rate this means that UK customers are predictably hit the hardest for no good fucking reason other than good old fashioned corporate greed.

Well done Humble Bundle. Well fucking done...

This is nothing new. Publishers have been sectioning off their SKUs to take advantage of variances in exchange rates for a long time.

      Feel my pain.

Prices in general get jacked up in Canada, even on shit that's made here just because we're Canadians.

What does that mean? Why would the exchange rate make things more (or less) expensive?

The exchange rate for $USD to Yen is about 1:103; the exchange rate to BPS (British Pound Sterling) is 0.60. So, a Japanese paying 103 Yen for an item is paying as much as a UK resident paying 0.60 BPS as an American paying 1 USD.

The exchange rates only tell me how to compare--it doesn't make things more (or less) expensive by themselves. (As far as I can tell, anyway.)

It's because publishers can then push retailers into charging the same amount in units of currency while also taking advantage of the exchange rate to make even more money. it's one of the main reasons why Atlus are region locking their games now: JP and EU fans find it cheaper to just import the US version. It basically means that publishers now get to charge whatever the fuck they want.

Okay let's take a game they are charging $15 for. Now these fucktards will just switch the $ sign to the £ sign. That game will be £15 in the UK which is $25. Basically an extra $10 per sale is being made because greedy cunts are pushing this skeezy business practise on the consumer.

Tax has nothing to do with it, that is already factored into the price, and $10 off $25 is a bit more than the 20% VAT on things here.

What makes this hurt the most is that this is a CHARITY pulling off this shit. A non-profit organisation is now trying to maximise profits. That my friends is the move of a bunch of cowardly fucking wankers and I won't be supporting the Humble Store any longer if this remains in place.

Basically yeah. What's aggravating about Canada's situation is our Dollar has been fairly close to the USD for years, and yet we see price hikes of up to 50% in some cases on some items. Every time I see a new system announced, and the number is the same for every region I cringe for the Europeans & UK especially... PS4 for example, is like what, nearly an extra $300 compared to here? That's outrageous, and there's no justification for it either.

Sellers can already sell same item for different amounts to different people using US dollar: extra shipping and handling depending on location, discounts for preferred customers, etc. Actually, they can just plain charge different prices to different people for almost no reason--or same people but at different times (Amazon does this, I think).

Use of local currency makes it easier, but it's not a requirement.

Seems like the problem you're worrying about is "market segmentation" and not "currency exchange rate".

For example, a classic method for market segmentation:

It's quite possible the company will not keep price parity across the pond anymore, but hard to know for sure until after they've priced the merchandise in Euro and GBP. (Or have they already done so?)

Re: Humble Bundle to begin gouging UK customers.

Nope, all they did was change the $ sign to a £ sign. Which is what every other publisher and retailer does when they want to maximise profits without giving one shit about the consumer. There is a very good reason why Steam has things priced differently per region, so that everyone is paying the same amount regardless of what currency you're paying in. That $15 game will still cost the equivalent of $15 in the UK (£9) or the EU (€10). GOG just lets everyone pay in dollars.

basically the UK and EU are seeing a 20-25% price increase for no justifiable reason other than greed and to see this coming from a non-profit organisation is nothing bit shitting in the faces of those that support the Humble Bundle. What you will see is less support for the Humble Bundle which is bad for everyone.

Well, a persistent lack of price parity is either an injustice, or a business opportunity.
