  • Elder Scrolls Online MMO beta and thoughts about the game

So from what I understand the beta has been released and some people are playing it. What have you heard about it? Is it very similar to Skyrim? I loved Skyrim and am looking forward to playing this game!

I got a beta key, but not interested in playing it only for a couple of days on the weekend, and having to deal with the rigors of beta testing. Considering FFXIV is my last foray into any MMO game (unless something really compelling comes along), I think I'm going to pass on this, as I did with Rift and GW2.

Did you play Skyrim? Because i did, and besed off of skyrim, i can't imagine why ES's online wouldn;t be total kick ass. Skyrim was amazing, it really took RPG's to a whole new level imo, and i was thinking the ES's MMO doing the same thing...

          Yeah ditto.

Well, I guess Destiny will be an MMO-like experience but it's not quite the same. XIV is leaving me feeling very jaded as well so I'll probably done with MMOs soon unless as you said something compelling comes along like a Mass Effect MMO (that doesn't suck) or if down the road SE gets their shit together and makes a proper sequel to XI this time and not some mish-mash of modern MMOs with an FF theme.

Odd, I came to the exact opposite conclusion. When I heard they were making an MMO Elder Scrolls game my first thoughts were "Oh this is going to be disastrous". The reasons I play Skyrim are completely and totally different from the reasons I play MMOs.

It's more that I just see the strengths of Skyrim as being diametrically opposed to the goals of MMOs. The two work against each other, so I don't see how combining them will make for a good game.

Or just realistic given Bethesda's track record. Several of my friends and I all joked that the whole game would be nothing but a massive glitch.

From initial impressions of several friends who got a different set of beta keys (these were essentially keys that allowed them to fully engage in beta as opposed to the one I got which limited me to just stress testing and certain weekends) they said it was not like Skyrim. You can interpret that as you will, but they have not given me a final assessment yet, as things are constantly changing during beta.

There's no NDA on the beta, right? I have a key for whatever they're currently doing, but I don't want anything to do with that game.

Re: Elder Scrolls Online MMO beta and thoughts about the game

I sunk 30+ hours into it over the beta weekend and got to have a good play around with the group content. We're still under NDA but to break it down:

                        • People bitch a lot about the questing though it's no different than your usual single player RPG sidequest fare "Go and farm 20 bear asses" quests are there though. But really? Why are you playing a PvP game for the PvE? Just go play FFXIV if you want gear PvE content.
                        • The PvP is the best I have played for a long time. not had this much fun doing PvP since Warhammer Online or Dark Age of Camelot
                        • You can play as a Nord mage charging around in Heavy Armour with a two handed Warhammer like I did have have the build be perfectly playable in a group. What the fuck else would you want?
                        • Bethesda still can't create a PC interface.

Being that I've done absolutely no research on this game I have a question:
Gameplay: Is it the Elder Scrolls gameplay where you control each swing of your weapon and aim and everything? Or did they go the traditional mmo route and you have an auto-attack with a bunch of damage boosting or mitigating abilities on cooldown?

                            You control the weapon swings.

Well I mean, character classes in TES games are pretty much completely nominal, though. One reason why I could never really get into it (or most one-skill-tree games, for that matter), even with Skyrim.
