Re: XB1 3 Million Units Sold

Personally I think MS is gearing up to overthrow Apple for #1 tech company but we'll see.

What'll be interesting to see is if Sony unseats Nintendo and re-takes their spot on Japan's top 10.

I find that chuckle worthy with a bit of historical perspective.

Anyway, by net income, Apple is bigger. By number of employees, Microsoft is bigger. By contractor and/or quasi-slave labor count--well, the companies wouldn't want to reveal that!

Uh, you're about 20 years late for that.

The last time Microsoft "won" a market share battle with Apple, it wasn't Microsoft that won the battle, it was x86 PCs because of a massive list of third party suppliers providing much cheaper hardware than Apple was charging for Macs.

Microsoft doesn't have the corporate DNA to unseat Apple in the consumer device arena. The two companies operate on very different levels in terms of their approach to basic design. Apple polishes their user experience to a spit shine, at the expense of power and flexibility. Microsoft bolts on the kitchen sink to their products, at the expense of efficiency and usability.

All their other attempts to compete with Apple have met with failure: Zune vs. iPod / iTunes, Windows Phone vs. iPhone, Surface vs. iPad.

What'll be interesting to see is if Sony unseats Nintendo and re-takes their spot on Japan's top 10.
Nintendo will probably hang onto #1 handheld with the 3DS. PS Vita is recovering somewhat in Japan, and it's still doing better there than everywhere else, but that doesn't even begin to suggest it can take down the 3DS in Japan.

Wii U's install base in Japan right now sits at around 1.6M, so there's no way PS4 can pass it immediately, unlike NA and EU, where PS4 has already blown past Wii U's install base. Right now, Wii U is selling less than 10K per week in Japan, so the clock is ticking for Wii U. Depending on how quickly Japanese third parties migrate to PS4, PS4 can realistically expect to pass Wii U in JP lifetime sales within a year - my wild guess is holiday 2014.

I didn't mean in direct competition for marketshare so much as just the biggest/most profitable tech company in the U.S.

Apple's still #1, but it remains to be seen if they can maintain that spot without Steve. Personally I find most of their stuff to be grossly overpriced and needlessly flashy, as opposed to say Samsung (e.g. i-phone vs Galaxy)

Not that MS has the smoothest of track records either (lolWindows ME & 2000, Zune, and a number of other boondoggles.)
