You realize that Hello Games has 4 employees, right? FOUR.

I'm saying that doing things like the sort of procedural generation on display in No Man's Sky is impressive even with a large team, let alone with a team of four.

Re: XB1 3 Million Units Sold

NPD figures just went out. Early hints are that Xbox One managed somewhere between 145K-150K in January, with PS4 selling almost twice that (so 250-300K). NPD = USA.

Microsoft is in big trouble if these numbers get confirmed. It's not Wii U levels of disaster, but it's definitely PS3 levels of disaster, and Microsoft doesn't have the sort of first party studios to pull them out of this sort of sales hole if their strongest territory is falling to the PS4 by a ratio of 2:1 this early.

                    EDIT: Microsoft's NPD PR

We are incredibly humbled and proud to see Xbox One continue to be the best launch of an Xbox in our history. Comparatively, Xbox One consoles have sold at a rate of 2.29 times faster than Xbox 360 in the U.S. in the same timeframe for the first three months on the market. From our blazing start out of the gate, we have continued to see Xbox One delight fans in 13 markets around the world, with many more markets to come this year.

More importantly, it is gratifying for our team to see Xbox continue to prove it’s the best place to play games. January NPD Group figures released today revealed Xbox* sold the most games across all console platforms in January with 2.27 million units sold, making up 47 percent of software market share. Fans continue to show their excitement for new generation Xbox One games, with U.S. consumers purchasing an average of 2.7 games per console since launch. This amazing success is due in large part to our unrivaled games lineup, first class Xbox Live multiplayer games service and a platform for game developers that offers unique capabilities such as Kinect and Xbox SmartGlass.
Note that they don't mention console hardware at all, and "Xbox*" = Xbox One + Xbox 360.

That not only confirms Xbox One is less than PS4, but also that [XB1 + 360] < [PS4 + PS3].

                    EDIT 2:
For reference, PS3's first January NPD was 244K, so XB1 is trailing even farther than PS3 was.

Re: XB1 3 Million Units Sold

Interesting, I had read that - at least initially - XB1 had outsold PS4 in the US, but now the gap is closing rapidly?

Well, they'd best have some spectacular stuff to show at E3 beyond simply Spark and Halo 5. Sony already has InFamous & The Order 1886 due out this year, exclusive content (and releasing a few weeks early I believe) for Destiny, plus Naughty Dog confirmed Uncharted 4 is in the works. I fully expect God of War and other staples to follow suit soon.

^^ this is why I love Sony, they actually back their studios whereas MS pretty much shut down most of theirs. Their strategy of paying off 3rd party developers for timed exclusives seems to be coming back to bite them at last.

That said, I did just opt in for the Titanfall beta (for PC). Damn you EA for not making it for PS4 as well (and putting BF4's DLC early on XB1, not that that matters much at this point rofl oh poor BF4... so much wasted potential).

I don't wanna see any of the big 3 tank though, because even just 1 of them going under would be bad for the industry as a whole. Sony conversely is doing quite well it seems:

No, XB1 has never led the PS4 in USA LTD. XB1 sold ~50K more units in USA in December due to supply constraints, but it wasn't enough to catch up.

                        November 2013 US NPD:
                        PS4: ~1,138K
                        XB1: ~909K (about 229K behind)

                        December 2013 US NPD:
                        PS4: ~850K (Total LTD: ~1.988K)
                        XB1: ~908K (Total LTD: ~1.817K, about 171K behind)

                        January 2014 NPD:
                        PS4: ~280K (Total LTD: ~2.268K)
                        XB1: ~143K (Total LTD: ~1.960K, about 308K behind)

                        EDIT: Fixed some math mistakes.

Re: XB1 3 Million Units Sold

More drama brewing in the NPD discussion topic at NeoGAF. NPD leaker creamsugar states that Wii U is in second place amongst "last-gen" consoles in January, and that it was not immediately ahead of PS3 in that listing (so PS3 would either be 1st or 4th assuming you also count Wii as "last gen"). Sony claims "combined sales of PS3 + PS4 beats all other platforms combined", which suggests that PS3 number is higher than Wii U.

The only sane conclusion to arrive at, then, is that Xbox 360 sales have also fallen off a cliff (PS3 > Wii U > 360 > Wii).

That's really weird if true, however, as Microsoft sold something like 643K Xbox 360s in December. Unless maybe a bunch of them were returned (returns count against sales in January for NPD tracking, as was witnessed last year with Wii U)?

That actually doesn't surprise me. The 360 does not have much coming for it on the immediate horizon and all I keep hearing from people is more and more buzz about how it's essentially a dead system now that XB1 is out.

That's not strictly true of course, as there's still lots of content coming for it that's either shared with XB1 (Destiny. Titanfall) as well as items that won't be available to it (at least not this year) such as TWD Season 2 and The Wolf Among Us. I don't see MS supporting it in the same way Sony will the PS3 however. I'm sure they want to push people to migrate to the XB1 ASAP.

To that end, apparently the Halo 2 remake is going to be XB1 only.

something like that. the sales of all the others have to be more than the ps4 for sony to boast that it's the ps4 and ps3 outperforming everything else combined (unless by console they meant console and not handheld).
