This is a smart move from Nintendo. The Zelda franchise is a bit... stale, despite the quality of A Link Between Worlds. Changing the gameplay style with a spinoff shouldn't hurt the brand and will bring in a different stripe of player - more specifically a type of player who is more traditionally aligned with Sony platforms.

I'm only mildly amused/interested in it. I knew TK wanted to Warriors something by Nintendo and Zelda works better thematically than the Pokemon Warriors game TK originally pitched, I'm just glad someone at Nintendo steered Pokemon and TK toward Nobunaga's Ambition instead.

Pokemon Conquest ended up to being one of the better Pokemon spin-offs, but then we also have the abomination that is Metroid: Other M. Nintendo and Team Ninja were too prideful to consult Retro Studios and obsessed with expanding the demographic by modernizing Metroid than sticking to what worked. Conquest worked because it stayed true enough to both audiences and wasn't as difficult to acclimate to as Nobunaga's Ambition can be.

Part of the appeal of Warriors is pushing you through battles that might occur based on how your battles changed the original history. The licensed spin-offs often neglect this facet - sticking to some hamfisted version of the original story - and ditch the robust playable cast Warriors is known for and there lies the problem.

Zelda is much about exploration and discovery as combat. The lore of the timelines are interesting and there are touching moments for characters, but Zelda's stories outside of Majora's Mask are largely forgettable.

If they want to do this right, then you need a wide, playable cast that spans the ages and plays with the timelines. I'd want to see different incarnations of Link (Hero of Time, Hero of Winds, Fierce Deity, etc) Zelda/Shiek, Impa, Gorons, Zora, Deku and even Demise, Ganondorf, Agahnim, Vaatai and more.

But can I expect that from TK and Omega Force?

Kinda doubt it.

They could mew, look what they done for One Piece, compared to that, Zelda will be fairly simple and more open to organize, whether they create an original/independant timeline, or reinvent an existing one. They confirmed this is like a spinoff, so they have more flexibility and countless possibilities.

Zelda is much about exploration and discovery as combat.

I'd argue Zelda is more about the environmental puzzles in the dungeons than exploration (not that there isn't some of that too). You could strip the overworld bare and if it still had good dungeons, I'd play it. All you get in the overworld these days is heart containers and rupees. Exploration is more Metroid's territory.

I would like to play as Zelda for once though. There's no reason she can't fight, and a spin-off like this gives them the excuse they need to do something untraditional.

I would have rather seen Zelda headline a game or another Four Swords game since its been two generations since the GameCube one.

As I've said elsewhere, you play one Warriors game and you've basically played the next 20 TK will release.

As I've said elsewhere, you play one Warriors game and you've basically played the next 20 TK will release.

And yet they continue to sell, so obviously something in the formula works. I maintain that this is a good move overall for Nintendo, considering it's coverage in a genre that they're deficient in and holds a lot of sway in their home territory of Japan (and also has some niche following elsewhere).

They tend to sell well in Europe too, the UK especially. Nintendo never had the Monopoly in the console market so lots of the 90's kids grew up playing the Mega Drive, a console known for having a lot of very good side scrolling beat 'em ups like Streets of Rage or Golden Axe.

Basically DW does well here because it is the spiritual successor of those kinds of games. TK realised it does have a pretty notable EU fanbase and is likely why we get new Warriors games before the US now. IIRC the game does so badly over there they gave up releasing retail copies of the expansions and go digital only.

It's also why I was commenting on it being a potential system seller. Just look at how well Ryse is doing in Europe (for an Xbox One game I mean).
