How many broken electronics are the fault of the couriers I wonder.
The couriers aren't to be blamed. Whoever packages the units are. If you're buying cheap or with free shipping, don't expect your units to arrive to you undamaged. Normally these things come from the manufacturers to withstand drops and certain amount of pressure and the manufacturers have known this for a very long time. You cannot blame couriers because it ultimately lies with the manufacturing of the units themselves. Microsoft and Sony engineers made a lot of compromises to keep the cost down, but apparently they should've also studied Nintendo's engineers more closely for helpful advice. That "I backed up over my Gameboy and it still plays like a champ, spiderwebbed screen and all" isn't just an urban legend.
With lots of units being reportedly running hot in both camps, I've come to the conclusion that it comes down to the heatsinks, thermal compound used, and the amount of passive cooling available in those units. If the parts aren't made to withstand a certain amount of heat build-up, even over a certain threshold, than there will be failures in spades.
