Re: PS4 Red Line of Death

People have been reporting disc drive issues. Apparently the PS4 that TotalBiscuit was sent by Sony was a dud one.

Not sure how reliable it is but Sony are reporting a 0.4% failure rate.

So basically the same warnings as any other console: being an early adopter is risky. The PS4 seems like it's pretty reliable but remember to be cautious.

I've heard more than a few defects so far. Faulty HDMI ports, some units just being plain dead on arrival and not booting at all. Mostly the HDMT thing, though.

Hard to say what the percentage of actually faulty units is; they have over 1M of them out in the wild, so it's anyone's guess as to what's causing each individual problem. Fortunately it seems like Sony has enough supply to keep people happy and still be able to replace any faulty units, so things seem to be doing ok.

My PS4 is working flawlessly so far. Haven't had any crashes or freezes even, though I've stayed away from CoD and Battlefield (being the biggest offenders in terms of buggy code right now on PS4).

Build your own PC and you may get a few pieces of hardware that's DOA, so this doesn't surprise me, although the it's usually the motherboard that shows up on your doorstep dead.

Yup. I've also had CPUs and memory sticks show up DOA when building PCs though. Can be a lot of things.

How hot has your unit been running? I've seen the Tweets from some of the bigger name game reviewers/journalists complaining about their units burning it up on their entertainment stand. Some users have even gone far as suggesting getting out your fan (in early winter no less) and blasting it on the PS4 unit while playing.

There's also rumors that some Foxconn workers may have purposely damaged units out of spite. Those are just rumors (although there might be a nugget of truth somewhere)

The difference being that you can just rummage through your parts box and swap out the defective component until the replacement part shows up.

I really think we've hit the point where consoles are just poorly disguised PCs.

It's warm but not hot, even when running more intensive games like Knack, Killzone, or Res0gun. Also very quiet.

I think the build quality issues are just down to there being so many of the things being in the wild; with this many units sold, you're undoubtedly going to get some duds even with normal electronics (1-5%).

Haven't tried it yet with Assassin's Creed IV but I don't expect it to be any more demanding than Killzone or Res0gun.

Or, they're electronics. There has never been any kind of electronic device produced that has not had some sort of defect.

Yeah I have yet to see how it handles 32 vs 32 player BF4 (Conquest Large) but so far the thing runs smoothly and barely makes a sound except on start up.

So after speaking to a friend today who manages a GAME, here's the grand total of XBox One's sold by his store:
