It has to do with the gameplay system. There are standard attacks, Brave attacks and the Default stance. More or less, to do Brave Attacks, you must store up turns by defaulting which you can do up to four times. Defaulting to store turns allows you to use those turns consecutively later and there's apparently a multiplier added ro each stored turn. catch is enemies can do it, too.

Its a risk reward system. Still a weird title, though.

SM3DW looks like a great game, but I'm not sure it's the game Nintendo needs right now.

From some perusal on NeoGAF, it looks like the Wii U versions of Assassin's Creed IV did 1% of the total sales in last month's NPD (USA tracker) with < 630K total sales (so less than 6300 units for Wii U version). Batman Arkham Origins didn't fare much better; Wii U version accounted for 1.8% of less than 650K sales (so < 11700 Wii U units). These are dismal numbers even for a port, and would be solid justification for all of the remaining 3rd party developers to give up on the machine unless they see a strong uptick in sales of Wii U this holiday.

I'm not sure SM 3D World is going to shake things up enough to break the Wii U out of its funk. Holiday sales almost always improve, but, well...

That bump in September was the Wii U price cut going into effect.

I'm really worried about Wii U now. 3D World had better do a lot better than anyone is hoping (and drag those flagging Wii U hardware sales with it) or this console is toast. It's tracking below the Dreamcast right now.

So it's essentially Xenogears' combo system except it actually works?

How do I read that chart? I don't know what the LTD lines mean and it's got two Y axes.

The intent of the chart is abuse numbers to misrepresent the failure of Dreamcast and cast the Wii U's struggles in the same light when the situations aren't even remotely similar. That and it fails to consider the fractured market that Wii U entered and PS4 along with XB1 will be facing.

            Its bullshit with lines.

The mobile and digital markets have changed things a lot, so comparing Dreamcast to anything right now is pitiful sabre-rattling and little else.

On the other hand, there's clearly a problem when something like Batman Arkam isn't breaking 12,000 sales.

Aren't the WiiU's total sales numbers still in the toilet or did that change when I wasn't paying attention?

Solid lines are monthly sales. Left Y axis is the scale for monthly sales. Right Y axis is the scale for lifetime to date (LTD).

You can see that the Wii U, despite having a very good launch month, is still trailing heavily behind the GameCube, and its weekly sales are similar to that of the Dreamcast (actually lower than the Dreamcast).

I don't see where BBQ's assertion of "mobile and digital markets have changed things a lot" paints things in a better light for the Wii U. ALL of the new consoles (3DS, Vita, Wii U, PS4, Xbox One) are challenged by mobile, so if anything the potential for recovery is even lower than the Dreamcast and GameCube had. Even if you take the Dreamcast lines out of consideration, the Wii U loses the comparison to the GameCube (which itself had FAR more advantages than the Wii U has at the moment).

As for total sales, according to Nintendo, they shipped 460,000 Wii U worldwide (not just US) in the last 6 months. Of course, Nintendo seems to think they're still on track to ship 9M total for the fiscal year. I wish them good luck on that, because I have difficulty believing they'll even make it to 4M shipped worldwide this fiscal year even with Christmas to help.

Maybe SM3DW will break out of the pack and sell some units, but even if it's the best game ever it's going to have less hype than even Super Mario Galaxy 1 did, and will likely underperform because of all the advertising noise that Sony and Microsoft will undoubtedly throw out this holiday.

Makes sense now, thanks. It does paint a rather bleak picture, although it would've been much more useful with some sort of baseline to compare against; either a current-gen console that's considered successful or Nintendo's own sales projections.

RE the Wii U being in the toilet: The console still has no compelling reasons to buy it and very few games that justify a purchase. it would take a brand new Zelda game for a lot of people to even consider buying one. Everyone is sick of the Mario saturation, and all of the "New" Mario games that are just a slightly prettier port or remake.

Also I would like to point again out that Dynasty Warriors 8 sold more copies than the Wii U console in Europe. That is how bad that Wii U's sales are. Now Sony has its shit together and the Xbox One is actually launching with some decent launch titles, I really don't see the Wii U recovering, at least this financial year.

I don't want the Wii U to burn, that would be bad for everyone. The Gaming Industry need MORE competition, not less. Especially now with the likes of Valve and Microsoft running around trying to build monopolies, and the likes of EA, Activision and Ubisoft just cloning each other's games, because Call of Duty sells well for example. I do want the Wii U to succeed because as a console, it definitely interests me, but I have no reasons to buy one because the games aren't there. All the good Nintendo Exclusives are launching on the 3DS, so why would I look at the Wii U?

The problem right now is Nintendo gaining Sony's mindset back in 2005.

Is that before or after factoring in the cost of them having to basically build two MMOs? I can't imagine they're anywhere close to breaking even on a project of that scale.

Read the article. As of September they are running an operating profit of $48m, with a net profit of $26m. Sales of ARR totalled $626m.

Now if they'd just hurry the fuck up with the endgame and lag (among other issues) fixes, because the hype is wearing off and while it's a solid game that I want to support, I've been finding my interest fading fast and that's incredibly disappointing after all the excitement going into it. It saddens me that XI actually did so many things better, despite being a very bad game at its core.

As for the Wii U: Nintendo had damnwell better have the best PR storm ready to go for 2014 or it's lights out, and I don't think anyone wants to see that happen. Like FW said, I still Nintendo deep down, but for too long there's just been a severe lack of appeal from them. Sony & MS are going to trounce them when it comes to 3rd party stuff, it's not even remotely fair, which leaves Nintendo in a very murky place where they have to come up with AMAZING exclusives, and not just their traditional fare either. "X" is a good start, but not enough on its own.

Wow that's crazy... too bad Seekers of Adoulin didn't do so well. Kinda sucks too, as I was looking over some of the upcoming stuff for XI and they're updating a lot of the older content to make it relevant again. SE should have NEVER broken from their old progression model just to please the WoW kiddies. Nothing sucks more than older content being obsoleted and so when someone who genuinely needs or wants to do it tries, there's hardly anyone left.

I don't see where BBQ's assertion of "mobile and digital markets have changed things a lot" paints things in a better light for the Wii U. You don't see because you selectively read things I type. I implied the situation is different now - as in, for everyone.

The Dreamcast comparison is not valid because of WHY the Dreamcast failed. As I just said in another thread, Sega had an arms race mentality - they could not stand to let another competitor have better or equal hardware to them. Whenever Nintendo or anyone closed a gap in tech, Sega would blindly leap ahead without considering the consequences. The Genesis was already doing well, but the second the SNES hit the market Sega lost their marbles and went on to develop more new tech. It is fair to point out NEC was a factor in this timeframe, as they also had rather equal hardware.

These things made Sega jump to Sega CD. Sony announces Playstation and then Sega has to beat Sony out the gate with Sega Saturn. Sony and Nintendo mutter about PS2 and Gamecube and BAM the Dreamcast is out well ahead of both without the software to last. Sony and Nintendo just bided their time, made their plans and let Sega kill themselves while Xbox assumed Sega's place.

Sega constantly put hardware over the software so developers and consumers alike had difficulty committing to either. That's not a problem Nintendo, Sony or MS have. This is why the comparison between Dreamcast and pretty much anything is invalid before we even get to stacking tablets and smartphones against Wii U, Xbox One or PS4.

And this is beneficial to the Wii U and makes its situation less dire... how? Everyone is gaming on their iPad now, so suddenly the Wii U is in a better position this holiday?

Sony selling 1 million plus units in one day of PS4 puts the lie to the idea that the broader market isn't interested in next generation console gaming. It's just not interested in the Wii U.

The Dreamcast comparison is not valid because of WHY the Dreamcast failed.
                                Just stop.

The Dreamcast was a failure on a variety of levels, sure.

The Wii U is failing on a different set of metrics, but it is still failing. What other description can you give to a brand new console that can't manage half a million sales in the past six months? It's not really just an issue of messaging, or processing power, or delayed games, it's all of the above. (And yes, by that same description, the PS Vita is similarly failing, and for the largely same reasons).

If you can't see that, then you need to buy a houseboat in Egypt so you can keep on living in denial. All I'm seeing you doing is shouting "It's not exactly like the Dreamcast, the Dreamcast was a failure, therefore it's not a failure!".

Gotta do whatever makes you sleep at night, I guess.
