^ all that despite a price drop and being the cheapest of the 3 options.

Personally I think Sony's nailed the sweet spot, putting the emphasis on games with the other stuff second (MS doing just the opposite) while also having the best machine in terms of technical specs and is in the middle of the price range (plus PS+ is $10 less than Gold). Of course, they also got a huge windfall courtesy of MS in the wake of all that horrible PR.

I think this is probably the biggest part. Sony had an uphill battle before all this. I realize that just because Xbox was the bigger winner in the last generation that it doesn't mean it would be this generation, but they had the bigger client base to start with, they just burned their bridges with god awful PR and bad decisions overall. I still have several friends who are sold on XB1, but that's mostly due to fanboyism over XBL, Halo, and Gears Of War. And while I'm still a Sony fanboy, I can definitely call them Xbox fanboys when they try and justify all the crap MS later had to recant (persistent online, drm, etc.) earlier this year.

Oh mew, maybe I should sell my 3DS XL for Wii U for this?

Super Mario 3D World | Review Thread - NeoGAF

        Eurogamer 10/10
Compact by the standards of the Galaxy adventures but still loaded with bountiful secrets, beneath the warm familiarity of 3D World lies one of the strangest Mario games in years - or at least one of the most random in its influences and its moment-to-moment indulgences. And that's a very, very good thing. The Wii U sees Nintendo's mascot racing into venerable middle age by going wonderfully loopy - by dialling up the energy, even if the end result is often absolutely insane. After all these years, who could blame him?
        Destructoid 10/10
There was a moment where I was taking in the beautiful soundtrack, hovering over a tricky jump as cat Peach, and watching the glistening water below where the game really came together. It was then that I realized that Super Mario 3D World had achieved a level of platforming design that's close to perfection, and there was almost never a moment where I didn't have a smile on my face. This is the unequivocally the best Mario game since Galaxy 2, and it shows up anything the "New" series has ever done, and then some.

        Good work, Nintendo.
        Nintendo World Report 10/10
Thankfully 3D World isn’t just a refinement of the Mario formula, it’s a powerful re-imagining. It’s an explosive cavalcade of color and excitement as well as a well thought out evolution of Mario. The plot even deviates (although not too wildly) from what you might expect in a Mario game, giving you some silly surprises amidst the parade of unlockable content. This is one Mario game you’ll want to play well after the credits roll and might just be the killer app of the Wii U. Not since Super Mario World have I been so in love with a Mario game.
        Nintendolife 10/10
This is a definitive 3D Mario experience, successfully finding a middle-ground between the iconic Super Mario 64 and Super Mario Galaxy. You may not swing Bowser by his tail or run upside down, but it’s bursting with creativity nonetheless, while delivering on the craft and skill that defines the Tokyo EAD studio. It’s unmissable.
        Darkstation 10/10
Super Mario 3D World is both gorgeous and about as enjoyable as a video game can be. There is an immense amount of depth that kept me coming back for more, time and time again. This is the rare type of game that I believe ten years down the road we will be coming back and playing again and again. It’s that good. For all those worried that the Wii U was going to fall into some dark oblivion, fret not, your savior is here and its Super Mario 3D World one of the best platformers ever made.

        CVG 10/10
It's perhaps best summed up by its soundtrack, where bouncy strings meet gently percussive tropical themes, chiming Christmas bells, jaunty accordions, and energetic shamisen and shakuhachi. While its rare orchestral manoeuvres are among the musical highlights, it's telling that there's little of Galaxy's bombast. As the fervour for next-gen hardware reaches its crescendo, EAD Tokyo has quietly gone about the business of making the best game you'll play this Christmas.

There's no clarion call of trumpets to herald the arrival of Super Mario 3D World. And yet, of all the games released in the next couple of months, it might deserve the biggest fanfare of them all.

        Digitalspy 5/5
Like 3D Land on the 3DS before it, Super Mario 3D World is a must have for existing owners and enough for anyone on the fence to make the plunge.

Similarly, while it isn't a strong case for the Wii U's unique features, that doesn't make it anything less special. It's platforming perfection, brimming with clever ideas and flawless execution.
        Venturebeat 97/100
When taken as a whole (the single-player refinements, the visuals, the music, and the multiplayer), Super Mario 3D World is my favorite 3D Mario and the best game I’ve played in 2013.

I really hope that they do keep their promise and slowly start to improve. The Xbox One does have the better launch lineup and has more exclusives that I personally would play (Ryse, Forza). The living room stuff is promising but honestly, I see the PS4 as being far better in the long run because it went back to the focus on gaming. If I got an XBox One, I can see it ended up as a Netflix Box, a service that is awful in the UK due to it constantly removing content. Problem is is that Sony don't hide Netflix behind a paywall like Microsoft do.

My 360 is a great example. I have it for Tales of Vesperia, Forza and Halo. That is it. Most multiplatform games I just buy on the PC anyway, or I get for the PS3 if the PC version is a horrible port (Like the GTA series in general, or Dark Souls).

Hey, it could happen, even EA are starting to get better and are dialling back a lot of their shittier practises.

Well, except launching all BF4's DLC 1st on XB1, which is hilarious when the damn thing is a long ways off from even being available in several key regions.

I'm wondering how much of that is Microsoft and how much of that is EA. Microsoft is getting all kinda of desperate and they are known for pinning down timed exclusivity for DLC and whatnot.

I would personally wait for BF4 to be actually playable first though before even thinking of DLC. As it stands, good luck playing more than half a game before it crashes. Thank god Origin has a returns policy. Otherwise I'd be short £50 (about $80).

Yeah my platinum edge membership allows me to return it until the end of tomorrow, I think, as part of their new guarantee.

I'm considering returning my PS4 as well at this point, I dunno - it's not as hot as I was hoping, not all the features are working like I'd hoped and well money's pretty tight atm.

I thought xBox and PS3 sold about same number of units so far? With Wii outsold them both?

Did the unit count of xBox360 games exceed PS3's by a significant margin?

It would be a goddamn surprise if Xbox 360 console sales didn't outpace the competition given how often they keeled over and died.

Now sure how accurate the Wikipedia entries are, but:

Xbox 360 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
                      79.4 million units sold

PlayStation 3 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
                      80 million units sold

Wii - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
                      100.30 million units sold

(I would assume Wii owners on average bought fewer games than the other two, but have no data to go on for average number of games bought by xBox 360 owners vs. PlayStation 3 owners.)

^ Wikipedia isn't quite right. Xbox 360 crossed 80M shipped in mid-October. PS3 crossed 80M shipped in early November. Wii just crossed over 100M shipped. I would expect the gap between them to close significantly over the next few years; it wouldn't surprise me to see the 360 and PS3 come very close to, if not surpass the Wii in lifetime sales at some point.

PS3 will have longer legs than the 360 though, since it's still getting new games released for it and will continue to do so for at least another year.

I'm pretty sure the overall software attach rates are pretty comparable between 360 and PS3. They do, after all, share much the same library. The Wii is probably slightly lower due to the casual focus offsetting the selling power of the Nintendo first party exclusives.

~100K for SM3DW is not very good. Worst launch week of any 3D Mario game in Japan, and barely even causing a blip on Wii U hardware sales.

As I mentioned above, Wii U is in trouble, and SM3DW is not the game it needs.

EDIT: And it's worth noting that neither the Xbox One nor PS4 are out in Japan yet. I expect SM3DW to perform significantly worse in North America, where it launched alongside the Xbox One and one week after PS4.

~100K for SM3DW is not very good. Worst launch week of any 3D Mario game in Japan, and barely even causing a blip on Wii U hardware sales.

As I mentioned above, Wii U is in trouble, and SM3DW is not the game it needs.

3D Mario has never been exceptionally popular in Japan. 3D Land did best, but then Japan favors portables and mobile over consoles and always has. 3D Land had MH3U on the heels of 3D Land in Japan, so many more gave 3D Mario a chance than usual.. Guess what outpaced both by a notable margin?

Animal Crossing. Not even Nintendo saw that coming.

I point this out because while Japan favors handhelds and mobile, they also skew very hard on tradition and genuinely social gaming.

Mario 3D World is neither and not really targeted at Japan, but the West, so we're going to need US and EU to really see if the new Mario changed any thing. What I can say from being in retail on holidays is interest is up right now and, so far Nintendo's holiday bundles are quite attractive.

Bundles of Wii U? Attractive to who?

                                250GB Xbox 360, PS3 bundles for $187 at Fry's on Black Friday - GameSpot

For a little over half the price of a Wii U you could get a PS3 with The Last of Us and Batman: Arkham Origins on Black Friday ($187 bundle), or an Xbox 360 with Tomb Raider and Halo 4 for the same price.

Wii U is caught in the middle right now. It can't win on price because the Gen 7 consoles are still going strong, and it can't win on new feature appeal because the Xbox One and PS4 blow it out of the water in both tech and hype.

I'm sure sales will pick up over the holidays - they always do. But just because Christmas is coming isn't going to make the Wii U fly off shelves when it has sub-$200 consoles with huge libraries on one side of it, and shiny new $400+ consoles that have more mindshare on the other side.

Not to mention, SM3DW launching alongside Xbox One and a week after PS4 was tremendously foolish. Yeah, let's try and get people to buy this $60 game for a console they likely don't own yet with brand new shiny boxes from the competition hitting store shelves. That's a good idea, right? /sigh
