Nintendo: more cross-play titles in the works, company “committed” to helping devs | VG247

Responding to a query about Pure Chess, which is likely to support cross-play with PlayStation 3 and Vita, Nintendo confirmed it’s given the go-ahead.

“We can confirm that cross-platform functionality is possible in certain titles that play on Nintendo 3DS and Wii U, as well as other video game systems not made by Nintendo. We are committed to helping developers realise the full potential of their software on Nintendo systems,” a representative said in a statement.

“We can confirm that Disney Infinity from Disney Interactive Studios, Cubeman 2 from Three Sprockets and Pure Chess from Ripstone, all have the ability to play on Nintendo systems while at the same time communicating with consumers using those same games on other systems. Additional games using this functionality are in development.”

Cubemen 2 was the first game announced with cross-play, and if Sony agrees, Pure Chess will be the first to have cross-play with a rival console – as opposed to mobile or computer platform. Disney Infinity has cross-play with mobile apps.
Excellent moves from Nintendo on this front.

Wii U vs. 3DS vs. PS4 vs. PS Vita players? Neato, especially if Sony agrees - which they likely will, seeing as we've already seen examples of them not particularly worrying (FFXI, Portal 2, DC Universe).

I assume Microsoft will probably never agree to this, given their level of insularity with Xbox Live (see: FFXIV).

I'd also like to see more cross-platform play within Nintendo's own ecosystem beyond just Super Smash Brothers. One thing Nintendo really ought to be copying from Sony is the concept of buy-once-get-it-on-all-platforms. If they want to push more Wii U functionality, this would be one way to do it.

Holy crap this is exactly the sort of good news I was hoping to hear from Nintendo, especially how they seemed to blunder through 2013 as though nobody knew who was sailing the ship. Pretty excited to see how it pans out.

Holy shit, Icemage is saying something nice about Nintendo.

Surely this is a sign of the end times. I think the prophecies also mention Cidbahamut smiling and YellowMage reaching max level.

I really don't see why you guys think I have an axe to grind on Nintendo. I love them, I love their games. I just don't feel like that makes them immune to criticism when I think they do something unwise, same as how I adore Valve but still think the Steambox is likely going to be more or less stillborn as a hardware platform.

Because as the guy who's both really plugged into the scene and willing to criticize Nintendo you end up bearing the image of being the guy who criticizes Nintendo all the time. Mal and I both probably have more of an axe to grind, but you're the guy who always seems to know the more minute details of what Nintendo is fucking up at any given point in time.

It's not a bad thing either. There is value in having informed criticism lobbed at companies that make grievous errors. Better that than me being bitter and complaining because I grew up and the game company I loved as a child refused to grow with me.

Basically sums up my feelings on Nintendo rather nicely. Very much looking forward to "X" and a couple other titles, but otherwise Nintendo continues to underwhelm me. It's out of any deep-seated hatred of them, far from it - I just haven't been excited for their stuff the way I have been for Sony in a very long time and I have my doubts whether that'll ever change.
