  • Batman: Arkham Origins Blackgate trailer

This handheld game's been hiding behind the scenes while Batman: Arkham Origins has been getting most of the press. This version is a Vita and 3DS Metroidvania from a team founded by former Retro Studios employees.

That's Troy Baker as The Joker, by the way, not Mark Hamill.

Though i'm wondering what excuse they contrived to put The Joker in Blackgate Prison, which is where they put all of Gotham's sane criminals.

I'll probably get the Vita version of this - mostly just because the retail selection for Vita this Fall doesn't really have much else exciting going on unless FFX/X-2 HD get a street date.

If you had any doubts about Troy Baker filling Mark Hamill's shoes, consider them erased.

It's very similar. Mark will always be the King, but Troy's a damn good 2nd.

      I'm impressed.

I don't think there's anyone out there who can really replace Kevin Conroy or Tara Strong though.

Very impressive. I'm actually looking forward to Blackgate more than Origins. I kinda know what to expect from a 3D Batman already, but Blackgate's gameplay looks really neat.

You say that like you've never played a Metroidvania with brawling before.

I hope Armature does well. I still find it funny that they left Retro Studios because they were "tired" of Metroid and the first thing they do that's their own is a Metroidvania. Meanwhile Retro moved on to make Donkey Kong games.

Don't get me wrong, though, Batman fits the genre. Link and Samus are gadget-driven, puzzle-solving heroes just like Bruce is. Cribbing notes from Zelda and Metroid Prime was what got the Batman IP back on track in video games.

I don't know what that had to do with anything, but okay.

Metroidvanias typically do not have the sort of counter-attack flow that the Arkham games have had, so I don't know why you're bringing up Guacamelee as an example. From hands-on reports, it seems they've managed to preserve the rhythmic combat from the previous 3D games and translate it to a 2D plane, so I'm excited to see how that works in person.
