  • Tales of Xillia is the RPG that surpasses Final Fantasy series (except the mmorpgs)

Well it seems that is the case, mew. Unlike the FF rpgs as of late, that have become less and less like the golden age of rpgs, Tales holds onto the essences of mewiful rpg fundamentals. Great characters, great story, great journey, greater gameplay (ya, I found that FF rpg are really behind Tales series in many aspects, including character interaction, battle systems, co-op, replay value, world design, etc.). And Xillia has two main characters to choose from (which adds more perspective choices, main character choices and stuff, while both still having relevance in the plot. And this feature is the next best thing to character creation). Having done more research, I'm really amazed how Xillia is really one of the few that authentically surpasses FF rpgs without abandoning its fundamentals. (bad producer, director, writers are partially to blame for FF rpgs downfall.) Xillia looks to save the genre

I'm actually tempted to buy a controller and power cable for the PS3 that's sitting in a box in my room just for this. Shame it won't come to PC.

Rofl ... the Tales series is action RPG as opposed to turn-based RPG, which is what FF has been about (until the unveiling of FFXV, that is) I'm surprised that you had to do "research" on this considering that the game is over 2 years old ;p

I've had my CE pre-order from the time it was made available and am looking forward to playing this. I've thoroughly enjoyed the Tales series all the way back to Phantasia on the SFC.

I'd argue that the FF series hasn't been turn-based since IV due to ATB (FFX being the exception). But then again the FF series has never been able to make its mind up on if it should go turn based or real time with makes me happy that FFXV has actually settled on something.

ATB is still an extension of turn-base with an illusion of control over the battle. There is still an annoying global cool down that stinks of turn-base (AI does not need 5s to run a script)

The battles still run even if you don't take an action though which is why I argue that ATB isn't turn based. if you run IV-IX and XIII without taking an action, enemies (and party members in XIII) will still take actions while you are still sitting there looking silly. You do have the ability to hit a button to switch to another active party member which is one advantage since in pure turn based games, you might need to spend an action to get to the member you want.

Contrast to say FFX or Persona 3/4 where you are purely turn based with ways to manipulate the turn order via the game mechanics.

I'm not calling ATB bad, and I apologise if I came across as trying to say that. Yes I personally dislike it and would rather a system just use turn based or real time and not try to go for hybrids, but I'm not calling it a bad thing. I'm just trying to point out why I would place ATB under the "Turn Based" umbrella.

FF12 and 13 aren't really turn-based either, so I don't get the distinction. FF10 was the last mainline FF that actually regularly paused the game by default to let you determine actions.

Shit that reminds me, I need to go to EB and tell them to downgrade my order from the collector's to the standard (get a free upgrade to limited edition anyways so not paying the extra $$$)

Really looking forward to this game.

No, I'm just saying that I hate ATB and I hate turn-base (it was good for when I first got my feet wet with JRPG, and there's moments where I like it so that I can just focus on the story, but since good stories are few and far in-between, I rather the gameplay be more dynamic) Tales is my favorite JRPG series.

Really looking forward to this game.

I should've gotten the LE myself, since I already have a Milla figure.

Blondes normally aren't my thing, but dang :O

I think I'm gonna play her first, then the guy's story after (I know it's largely the same just diff viewpoints).
