  • Capcom announces a Strider reboot! (but made by... Double Helix?)

Strider (Capcom/Double Helix, PC/PS4/XB1/PS3/360, early 2014) [Open World, Orig Devs] - NeoGAF

    EDIT: Now with video!

    * New game is a 2.5D open world Metroidvania (in the same sort of gameplay vein as Shadow Complex).

    * The original designers of Strider are on the team.

    * However, the developer is Double Helix (same studio working on Killer Instinct for Xbox One).

    Double Helix games (via Wikipedia)

    Silent Hill Homecoming (PS3/360/PC)
G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra (NDS/PS2/PS3/PSP/Wii/360)
    Front Mission Evolved (PS3/PC/360)
MX vs. ATV Reflex (PC port)
Green Lantern: Rise of the Manhunters (PS3/Wii/360)
    Battleship (PS3/360)
    Killer Instinct (XBOne)
    Harker (PS3/Wii/360)?

I love Strider more than most franchises, but... not like this. *shakes fist at Capcom*

Game looks fascinating, but with a development track record like that... sigh. Maybe it will be good? Maybe?

God damn it, I was all excited until I saw the Double Helix tag....

This is going to blow chunks. DH has yet to make even 1 good game.

      Gameplay video (7 minutes).

Gameplay looks a tiny bit slower than the original, and more forgiving. Not necessarily bad, as this gives me more of a Bionic Commando Rearmed feel, but with tons of graphic bloom.

Is that video cropped or do enemies really start shooting you before you can actually see them? Also not keen on many bullets he's taking without repercussions. Never played the original though so I'm just judging it at face value.

The original was awesome and pretty fast-paced.

I just have absolutely no faith in Double Helix, based on past experiences (homecoming was particularly awful).

I never was huge into Strider, but so far it looks fairly on-point with what I remember, but yeah, a touch slower and too much bloom.

Also its time to stop crying about what developers do with franchises when the blame rests on the publisher that assigned the game to them. Konami has mismanaged Silent Hill and Team Silent lost touch with what the series was about well before Double Helix ever touched the game. There are directors that tried their best to keep people from reusing very symbolic characters like Pyramid Head, but got overidden by producers and now he just stomps around in movies because he's "iconic."

this interview of Tomm Hulett explains a great deal about what went on with Shattered Memories and Homecoming.

First of all, no, bad devs are bad devs - Double Helix has consistently put out trash, much like Slant Six Games.

Second, Team Silent left Konami after SH3 and it shows, as it was from 4 (which wasn't even a SH game originally, it had the label thrown on because it was doing poorly in focus groups) and onward that the quality of the series has decline drastically.

Just like RE, actually, which is kinda creepy.

If bad devs are always bad, then Tomm Hulett made Contra 4 bad by his involvement and getting WayForward on board.

Contra 4 is regarded by many to be the series and praised even by the original creators of the series.

                Your reasoning is flawed.

My observation is that you can deflect bullets (you can see his defense meter drop as he takes hits or whatever that blue meter is above) while in motion. And yes, they're shooting from off-screen, but the original game did some of that too, though not with bullets at that speed.

I assume the gameplay video is on Easy mode, as almost everything is dropping health and defense restoration orbs.

Side note about Contra: I think Hard Corps Uprising to be the best spiritual successor to the Contra series. Contra 4 is not bad, but it's hamstrung by the horribly low resolution of the Nintendo DS.

Contra 3 will always reign king.
