Re: Current State of the Next Gen War
I don't really approve of the topic, but here's my attempt to re-rail the discussion.
I actually got a chance to play The Wonderful 101 a few days ago. I was up in Chicago this weekend at the Navy Pier. Nintendo had a number of these cute portable kiosks all decorated with their usual mascots and a bunch of Wii U and 3DS. It was nice to see them taking an interest in actually advertising.
Anyhow, having played some of the already-released stuff, the only one I really wanted to try was W101.
All I can say is... Nintendo had better pray the finished game is better than the demo. The gameplay is fairly fun, but it's a confusing mess on-screen, and there is absolutely no anti-aliasing. After 10 minutes of play I wanted to gouge my eyes out of my sockets (and said as much to the Nintendo rep), there were SO many jaggies. The characters are just jaggy-central, and the black comic-book-like outlines just made it that much worse. Graphics aside, the gameplay is decent. It's a somewhat imprecise 3rd person beat-em-up, sort of like Viewtiful Joe in 3D. I never thought I'd see a game more prone to jagged edges than Xenoblade Chronicles, but XC doesn't hold even a flickering candle to the cutlery shop on display in The Wonderful 101...

Re: Current State of the Next Gen War
Sadly The Wonderful 101's constant comparisons to Pikmin probably aren't doing it many favors. Pikmin 3 looks really, really great in HD. I know W101 is going for an action theme, but it also looks substantially low-budget, so much that you'd be amazed this was the same studio turning things up a notch in Bayonetta 2 - and that game looks quite a bit better than its predecessor.
W101 also has its advertised length going against it. I'm still rooting for it, but Thomas Was Alone and Journey are a couple hours long, too, but priced more accordingly. W101 is going to need some serious replay value to pull off a retail price.
Xbox One... still amazed its a thing, really. To be fair, I know Sony and MS will third parties go back to their anti-used crap at some point, those third parties are just wisely steering clear and shutting up because they want Sony and MS to have good launches. MS doing a faceplant before and during E3 should have told them everything gamers felt about what third parties had been doing, but when you have the likes of UbiSoft saying they need every new IP to become a franchise it just tells you how fucked in the head some of these companies are.

Re: Current State of the Next Gen War
^ that's not really very funny. :/
As things stand now, Sony's still cruising along to win the next generation. Unless things change, I expect the PS4 to end up with around 100M lifetime sales worldwide, the Xbox One with maybe half of that (possibly less), and it's anyone's guess where the Wii U will end up at this point. If Nintendo can turn things around with their release slate this holiday, the Wii U might end up with 50M. If not... probably way less.
