Re: Official "we make too many video game sale threads" Thread

Well thankfully I did manage to get 3 other people in time to split on that 4-pass.

Haven't even touched BL2 on my xbox since, lol. Steam is awesome.

If you don't have L4D2 yet, it's 75% off for the next hour.

Re: Official "we make too many video game sale threads" Thread

This year's Summer Sale has produced exactly zero deals that required effort to resist on my part. Of course, this may be partially due to the fast that everything I wanted that's for sale I already bought from them. Not sure if winning or lost before started.

I'm kind of in the same boat now. There were some good deals I jumped on at the start, but the last few days have been pretty underwhelming, and a lot of the sales appear to be repeating. Seriously, how many times has Torchlight 2 been on sale for $5 now?

Evoland is pretty tempting at $5. Allan wake and Deus Ex are $3 and then there's Dark Souls & Bastion...

Ugh, but even though they're super cheap, it all adds up and I still really need to watch my money right now. I kinda splurged on Borderlands 2, but I love that game to pieces.

Retail sale, but hey, still relevant. Just noticed it on Siliconera.

I wonder if they will ship to the UK. Ni No Kuni is still $70-75 in the UK new or second hand, and it's getting kind of ridiculous with the unwillingness of anyone to drop the price.

                  Retail is still relevant?

I dread the day when the market becomes entirely digital.

                      That's still a ways off.

Also have to consider what that means in terms of jobs as well.

My problem isn't with digital, it's with half-assed digital implementations where my stuff is non-transferable and non-futureproof. I know if Steam ever explodes any games I had already backed up will continue to work in offline mode.

But otherwise I wholly embrace digital. Retail makes no sense for indies and I tend to play a lot more indie games than AAA games.

And when you have to install them on a new machine several years after Steam explodes you'll be out of luck. Steam is convenient as hell and one of the best implementations of digital distribution on the market but let's not give it a free pass here.

It's not Steam's fault you didn't back up your shit for several years. You can not back up and live with the consequences of potential data loss, or you could protect yourself from data loss and pay for it with the minor inconvenience of backing up. But you can't have your cake and eat it too.

On the other hand if you're willing to back up, you can be fairly certain your shit will last forever; unlike a cartridge or disc, which can be stolen or broken. Hard drives are cheap and I can have my backups replicated in multiple places if I want.

EDIT: Also, I'm fairly certain I can use other people's backups if I've already validated the game with Steam at least once. I've copied shit from other people's SteamApps folder on more than one occasion. As long as there's one person on the Internet that had the game's Steam files, I'll be all right.

You mean backup any Steam downloads onto a disc or other media right? As I understand it, Steam only checks to validate once, and then you're good to play your games whenever you want?

Fuck off with that logic. You know damn well there's plenty of reasons someone might need to reinstall something from scratch.

If we're going to embrace full digital we should be embracing the GOG model where they straight up give you the install files and everything else with no strings attached. You can back up a GOG library indefinitely and only have to worry about compatibility/emulation from generation to generation, but Steam comes with an extra set of hoops to jump through that have the potential to divest you of your gaming library.
