  • Don Mattrick, head of Microsoft's Xbox Division, leaves to join Zynga

I think I've stepped into the Twilight Zone.

Is this real life? Can the saga of the Xbox One get any weirder? Tune in next week!

Microsoft boss Don Mattrick leaving to head up Zynga - Destructoid

It's official. Zynga has confirmed that Mattrick will join the company as CEO and member of the board of directors on July 8, 2013. "I joined Zynga because I believe that [founder Mark Pincus'] pioneering vision and mission to connect the world through games is just getting started," he said. "Zynga is a great business that has yet to realize its full potential."
My read of the situation: Steve Ballmer (Microsoft CEO) gave Don Mattrick an ultimatum: resign or I fire you because you suck at PR.

Why Zynga wants him is anyone's guess... he's got a lot of toxic baggage with him.

It's Zynga. Their whole business is toxic baggage. To them, he's a man with experience.

Who can lead Zynga's leaky ship to shore?

        Captain Don Mattrick, that's who!

Just look at the S.S. Xbox One, its finally sailing upright, isn't it?

        Right?

Just to add to the fail

Xbox One's Dashboard Has Been Optimized For Ads

          Notable quotes:

“On Xbox, the ad is part of the actual experience, it’s not something that is outside. The only difference is that the advertisement we have is quite small and not disruptive so people are not aware of clicking on the banners because they know this is a part of the whole experience on the dash,”... “So the users know that this is something that when they click on it, they won’t be hit by something crazy or something dangerous like on the web. Everything that lands there, we create.”
          And the author's response:

Oh, the ad is part of the actual experience now, is it? I didn't know I bought game consoles to be advertised to while I'm playing. Good to know that's money well spent... paying to be advertised to.

The next big feature in Farmville: Share your chocolate cows with up to 10 people on your Facebook friends list (but only for an hour at a time, after which they have to pay for their own cows).

Being able shepherd a complex project like xBox One to a(n entertainingly flawed) launch actually would require some real skills. Well, at least enough skills to impress a second tier gaming company which once flew high.

Watch out, Atari will be edging to steal Mattrick from Zynga next year.
              Bamboo shadows sweep the stars,
              yet not a mote of dust is stirred;
Moonlight pierces the depths of the pond,
leaving no trace in the water.
