You guys actually like that mutated monstrosity of an N64 controller? I could never even figure out how to grip the stupid thing. I always assumed you were supposed to sort of hold it like a hand crossbow but it was still the most awkward POS controller of its generation. I tolerated it because I liked the games on the N64 but the controller itself is garbage in terms of ergonomics.

There are three (well, effectively two) ways to hold the N64 controller, depending on the game you're playing. That's the brilliance of it.

Pretty much this. Whoever decided to put the analogue stick smack in the middle of the pad where it's always awkward and painful to use for games that use it (all of them), should be dragged into the street and shot.

To be fair Nintendo was the first to implement analog into every game on their platform. Yes, Sega had a controller with an analog stick, but it was only for Nights Into Dreams. At launch, the Playstation had no analog sticks, so when Sony went in to revise their controller, naturally they were able to think of some improvements.

Fuck the Dual Shock 3 with its loose L2/R2 triggers and it loose analog sticks, though. To this day, the DS2 is still better.

Also, his is why Take-Two is poised to take the lead spot from Activision and EA in the future. They get this market in ways those two are just clueless.

The fuck are you on about? The only game I remember ever making use of the d-pad was Mischief Makers. Everything else used the stick exclusively.

I liked the N64 controller's ergonomics, it was just the stick that killed it. On the other hand I've had no problem playing N64 games on alternative controllers. I liked the GameCube's best though; it was more compact and the D-Pad's position reflected its unimportance.

I wish the PS2's idea of analog face buttons had caught on though. It would've made a lot of things easier on Super Smash Bros.

Agree 100% - I've never liked the triggers on DS3 and felt 2's were just fine. Hopefully DS4's has been revised again. The 360's triggers are nice too, as they still require a bit of pressure - PS3's are simply too loose and I often found myself pulling them entirely on accident which really cost me a few times across numerous games (mostly in FPS like Resistance).

OMG I totally forgot about that game... was a piece of crap too honestly, so hard...

I used the D-Pad in a few other games as well but in general yes it was a rare occasion. I personally never had any problems adapting to the N64 controller. It was a bit jarring at first (as was seeing Mario in 3D as a kid after years of 8 and 16-bit) but I took to it in no time. To this date the Dreamcast and original Xbox (god DAMN that stupid Xbox One name MS, almost said that but caught myself while typing it) controllers are the only 2 I've ever had a real dislike for. OK and the Wii U's tablet, wtf is up with the face buttons being so far and below the sticks o_O

This is a really fantastic editorial from Rob Fahey at GamesIndustry regarding the current state of affairs between the Xbox One and PS4's stance on used games:

Pre-owned crackdown is a sad excuse for business innovation | GamesIndustry International

Stepping back to consider the wider picture, we're looking at a very bleak future for pre-owned or sharing of software. Steam is already the de facto platform for PC games, and it offers no second-hand sales channel and no method of sharing software with friends (and I mean that in the traditional "borrow my game" sense, not the euphemistic "sharing" as in piracy). iOS and Google Play games are locked to the user account. Now Xbox One (and possibly PS4) games will also prevent you from sharing games with friends and place hefty restrictions (and costs) on second-hand sales.

This isn't just going to impact on the racks and racks of second-hand games at game retail stores, it's going to have a major impact on gaming culture overall. It means no more buying a game and lending it to a friend when you're finished, or going halves on a copy of something both of you want to play. It means no more going over to someone's house and browsing their shelves for something to borrow - and by extension, removes a major impetus for many people to collect games in the first place. It means no more Lovefilm or other rental services for games, no more communal caches of games in the office that colleagues can dip into. Eventually, terribly sadly, it could even mean authorisation servers somewhere being turned off and an entire generation of games becoming inaccessible - a grim scenario but one which has already happened on a smaller scale with the switch-off of other DRM-backed systems.

There's little point in going into any huge depth about why this is all a bloody awful idea - suffice it to say that as a consumer myself, I don't think I'll be buying an Xbox One if its DRM system turns out to be as draconian, abusive and intrusive as it presently seems, and similar decisions by Sony would equally nix a PS4 purchase. Given that I've bought every console in every generation for almost 20 years, that's a fairly significant departure, but it's no idle chest-beating on my part. If you take out the ability to lend and borrow games, the process of sharing enjoyment and entertainment that's been at the heart of my gaming hobby since it began, I don't know that my time or investment in consoles is justified any more. It's terribly sad to think that key decision makers in our industry are now apparently of the impression that "social" in terms of prancing around like a drunken tit in front of a camera is the future of the medium, while "social" in terms of pressing a game box into a friend's hand with a gleam in your eyes and words of praise and enthusiasm on your lips is to be frowned upon and treated as criminal.
There's a ton more written in the article, but that last sentence really sums up my thoughts on the topic. I don't buy games used, and I don't think I ever will, but the act of lending a game to a friend or family member should be sacrosanct.

Meh, I played it for a bit when I was like 12 or 13 and didn't care for it. I remember seeing the box and saying "that looks so cool!" and then I rented it and... yah.

If you guys liked it, that's cool - I'm not hating. I just thought it was crap personally.

It's Official: PS4 Will Not Feature Used Game DRM Like Xbox One

This clears up a few things:
1.) The PlayStation 4 can play games offline without having to be online. This was clarified the day of the PS4's reveal back on February 20th.
2.) Sony will not have any mandatory DRM for used games. You can buy, play, trade used games on the PlayStation 4 just as usual. No additional registration fees, pay-walls or internet registration required.
3.) If you so choose, you can play games from disc, download them from the digital store or remote load them. Sony doesn't mandate any method over the other for multi-format titles.
4.) Just for extra clarification the PlayStation 4 does not and will not require a constant always-on internet connection.
