    Re: Xbox Reveal

    It says North America, but do they strictly mean U.S. only? That's going to piss folks off here in Canada.

    Dear lord they are just failing all over the map WTF I LOVE IT!!! Not because of any particular animosity (I happen to really like some of MS' stuff) but just for the entertainment value. I mean, it wasn't all that long ago that Sony was being just as arrogant and got bit in the arse *hard* for it. I think MS could do with a little deflation to their bloated heads. Seriously, that whole conference was like watching a damned peacock strutting its stuff. I dunno, Sony's just seemed to have a bit more class (and a lot more games) save for Square-Enix's epic trolling, but that's hardly Sony's fault.

    EDIT: Also, all of this is really making me miss our old podcast ; . ;

    EDIT: Oh man it just gets better and better;

    Sony's stock rises 9% in wake of Xbox One reveal, Microsoft stock drops fractionally : Tech Digest

      Looks like US-only. Canada's cable/sat setup is very different from US, so this isn't a surprise.

      I'm expecting Microsoft to back off at least some of the more draconian policies for DRM, but this unhealthy fascination they have for TV content that not many people watch any more is going to kill them. They're almost doing everything wrong at turning off core gamers right now aside from the sensible controller redesign, and - like the Wii U and PS4 - they've yet to make their case for why the non-core should care about their new expensive TV peripheral that also plays games. The only difference is the PS4 is clearly not targeted at that demographic (yet).

      Personally I think the first raft of multiplatform PS4 and Xbox One games will speak volumes about the focus and direction differences between Microsoft and Sony. I'd include the Wii U here, but I'm honestly not expecting the Wii U to hold its own in any of those comparisons unless someone manages to find an honestly good use of the GamePad in a multiplatform game. If the specs for the Xbox One are as rumored, which seems very likely, then the Xbox One is going to be at a notable disadvantage in multiplatform games. 3GB of XBOne RAM reserved to its 3x operating systems means that it's operating at probably a 2GB deficit compared to the PS4 on top of having slower and more complex memory. It has a graphics chip that's roughly 1/3 less capable than the PS4's (mostly confirmed), and I'm expecting the PS4 versions of many multiplatform games to simply run smoother / faster / prettier.

      In particular, I think Watch_Dogs may be the canary in the coal mine this winter. As an open-world multiplatform game that's going to be on all five platforms (Xbox One, PS4, Wii U, PS3, 360), it's going to be really interesting to see how the various versions stack up to one another. Open world games tend to push gaming hardware pretty hard, so any weaknesses in the hardware will become more apparent, particularly when framed in the context of a new IP that doesn't have an existing engine to piggyback tricks from. I'm expecting PS4 > Xbox One >>> Wii U > Xbox 360 > PS3, or somewhere thereabouts.

      EDIT: Also, all of this is really making me miss our old podcast ; . ;
      I'm not the complaints department for that.

        Oh great, so we're going to get yet another generation of dumbed-down games because Microsoft's kit is inferior to Sony's, wonderful.

          The XBox One Doesn't do anything a Smart TV doesn't already do. In fact it's worse than using a Smart TV because you will have Microsoft shoving stuff down your throat while trying to watch stuff. Plus if my connection craps out I still have a perfectly good TV sitting there that I can use to watch regular TV Channels. If my connection goes down while watching TV on an XBox one then I can't watch TV at all.

          Even better, the TV features won't even work in my country because "US ONRY".

          What exactly is the incentive to use these features?

          Just when I thought it couldn't get even more hilarious. This paragraph made me laugh so hard I woke up half of my family:

          Microsoft’s Mattrick says he doesn’t think compatibility is really a problem. He said only 5% of customers play older games on a new videogame system anyway, so spending time and money to develop technology to allow them to play older games isn’t worth it.

          “If you’re backwards compatible, you’re really backwards,” he said.

            What the fuckmothering Christ!? People don't play older games on new systems because the industry doesn't support any meaningful amount of backwards compatibility, yet you've got a used games market that is gargantuan and spans all the way back to the 8-bit era in varying degrees of volume. People play their older games. Why do you think GOG exists and continues to flourish? The only thing stopping me from playing all my old games on newer hardware is a complete and total lack of support for actually doing that.

            Jesus fucking Christ...

                      The thing is is that he likely pulled that 5% shit out of his own backside given that there are very few XBox games on XBoxLive. Plus hardly any of the XBox's library works on the 360 with no viable hardware excuse as both consoles are essentially PC parts thrown into a box.

                        Exactly my point. It's hard to play old games on new consoles when backwards compatibility isn't being implemented.

                                Yet there's so many of them in total that the few good ones are still more than I can keep up with.
