GOW: Judgment and GOW: Ascension failed, says analyst - Destructoid
I just thought this was an interesting story in light of SE's and Capcom's "disappointment" in games selling millions being disaapointing. The latest entries of God of War and Gears of War didn't even do as well as those. Gears sold about 450k and God of War sold 360k last month.
Both games also fell into the prequel trap, retreading story elements of the franchise that were more or less already told and both games adding very little to the existing story. Gears of War Judgement also took out some key gameplay features in multiplayer that lots of people enjoyed while God of War Ascension had a multiplayer component that really added nothing to the experience and swiftly nerfed one of the most challenging sections of the game just to appease trophy whores. That just baffles me, too, as the point of a trophy should be that you went out of your way to do something difficult or out of the norm for a game, plus tons of games filter out various trophies by difficulty setting. This sort of nerf is just pandering to fragile egos.
Also worth pointing out neither game was marketed that strongly even with months of press leading up to them.
I'm sure some will excuse these low sales for them being late-gen titles, but I don't think The Last of Us would be the sort of game to share this fate and that's a new IP. If fact, I'm betting it might do as good or better than Uncharted has.
