  • Square Enix Layoffs in LA Office

Layoffs hit Square Enix Los Angeles, part of 'corporate restructuring' | Joystiq

Wonder what kind of impact this will have on localization.

SE's speed of localization will continue to suck no matter what happens.

Unless its a game we don't want, like a FFXIII game.

This is probably the shortest post I've ever seen you make..

But as BBQ stated. Their localization hasn't been the best anyway, but hopefully with the new CEO he will expand on that.

Not sure what you're talking about speed (look at Namco Bandai's Xillia) but at least quality wise it's probably the best in the industry (content wise -- please don't compare localizing RPGs with FPS games ... srsly)

Atlus and XSEED are both noticeably better than Square-Enix at localization, but that's sort of their wheelhouse.

On the whole though, Square-Enix typically does a pretty good job of localization, and occasionally produces something stellar (Final Fantasy Tactics: The War of the Lions comes to mind).

CC only because Kitase didn't have creative control, if he did no localization could have saved it from becoming mindless babble.

I still say they need to boot him - they already booted Tanaka, and now Wada's on the way out so may as well finish the job - if you don't get rid of all the cancer, it'll just come back.

Kitase isn't bad under the right producer or director - he's just not producer or director material himself. Its essentially the difference between Star Wars when George Lucas when he's in check and when he isn't. The FFXIII trilogy is like the Star Wars prequel trilogy, except not as good.

And I'm being generous with the term "good" here.

SE also decided to prove how shit their localization his today. Bravely Default did get announced for US release today... in 2014. Either they're intimidated by the serious competition the game faces this year or they are really dragging their feet on localization. Not that Project X Zone is any better in that regard, but still, we don't even have to wait for that was as long. Shin Megami Tensei IV has two months between Japan and US release.

So yeah, SE still sucks at localizing in a timely fashion - unless its something we don't want. Oh, and they needed Nintendo to publish this for them.
