  • PS Vita Anniversary freebies

Jumped on PSN tonight and noticed the Vita Anniversary had been expanded and added some actual, honest-to-goodness free games amidst some sales that didn't interest me as much. I mean, I would get Sine Mora because that's awesome, but some of these cross buy games just scale too tiny to the Vita screen and demoing that I found it to be one of the casualties.

Anyway, I'm guessing this applies to US gamers only but here are the freebies, grab 'em up!

    Wild Arms (PSOne Classic)
    Patapon (PSP)
    Patchwork Heroes (PSP)
    Piyotama (PSP)

Not quite the awesome that the 3DS Ambassador GBA games were, but certainly not a bad haul for non-PS Plus subscribers. Here's hoping there's a few more in the weeks to come.

Free Vita games are OK, and it's not really an apology for dropping the price now, is it? I already have free Patchwork Heroes from PS+. Getting Patapon 1 goes well with my digital-only copy of Patapon 2, but that still leaves my UMD-bound copy of Patapon 3 with my 200+ hour save file. :/

I'm not bothered either way, because my PS+ subscription just keep paying for itself. Got a $3 discount on Bit.Trip.Runner 2, and Spec Ops: The Line as a freebie. Also coming are Joe Danger 2 and The Cave (already have this). PSV PS+ subscribers get Disgaea 3: Absence of Justice and (PSP) Tekken 6 this month.

EU PS+ subs make out like bandits this month. The North American PS+ stuff is great, but EU is consistently better. They get Sleeping Dogs, Vanquish, and Limbo this month for PS3, and Wipeout 2048 and Lumines Electronic Symphony for Vita. Really incredible stuff.

Simply dropping the price by $50 isn't the win Sony's looking for. For the last two weeks Vita sales have quadupled in Japan, but even with that its not getting close to what 3DS sells per week. That means the price of memory is still a drag. Most US and EU retailers that can make cuts to the price of memory - like Best Buy or Wal-Mart - have as much as they're willing to. Even so, $75 for a 32 GB card is still laughable when you can get that on SD for less than $20 most places.

3DS is really starting to pull far ahead on content in the US and Japan, too. March has some pretty notable releases and Fire Emblem and EOIV are still pretty fucking amazing right now (seriously, if you dug P4 for social links and gameplay, you'll love Fire Emblem to pieces). If you're in handhelds for RPGs, 3DS is the go-to system this year. Vita has a nice digital backlog of PS1 and PSP era RPGs, but aside from Persona 4 Golden there's not all that much there on the Vita side. Not to mention SCEA screwed the pooch on Persona 2 Eternal Punishment last week and didn't make it Vita-compatible. They really need to set those other PSOne classics free as well.

The freebies this week are nice, but Sony's giving away yeast rolls while Nintendo's selling steak. I like yeast rolls and will gladly take them, but still. At least these freebies make up for the utter bore that was Ecolibrium.

Is Wild Arms free in general or just for Vita owners?

I used to have the disc for it but got rid of it ages ago.

The Vita anniversary freebies are only free if you access them from the PS Vita store. PS3s will see the normal price if you check on a PS3.

You could always find a friend with the kindness in his heart to completely wipe his Vita memory and Memory card, let you log on to your account and poke the download button. Then it would likely be on your PS3's download list.

That's kind of a hassle for them, though.

I remember playing some of Wild Arms Alter Code F at some point and that it was a remake of this. I don't recall being enamored with it, but it wasn't a bad game by any means. Another RPG for the digital backlog is fine by me.
