Yep, Nintendo is remaking the cartoonish GameCube Zelda game and giving it the full Wii U treatment, complete with new graphics and Off-TV Play (meaning you can play the new Wind Waker on your GamePad, with the TV off). The remake will be out this fall.

Nintendo announced the news along with the promise of another Zelda game, which they say won't be ready to announce for a while.

If they use Skyward Sword's motion controls I'll take 5 copies.

FTFY. I hated how much recalibrating that shit took.

You only needed to recalibrate if you had your wiimote pointed somewhere retarded when you pulled out an item. Either way it's not like pushing down on the D-Pad is such a chore.

No, it was constantly messing up after a bit of use. Shane Satterfield said it best in his review on GT, that it works extremely well about 80% of the time... but that 20% it doesn't, it's pure Hell (which it totally was).

Whenever you go into an aiming mode (e.g. dowsing, slingshot/bow/boomerang, looking at the map) it takes whatever direction your wiimote is pointed to as the center. If you point your wiimote at the screen before doing any of those actions you'll have 0 problems. (EDIT: Even if you don't aim the wiimote at the screen, it's still usable - you just move relative to where you started aiming.) Go play the game again.

You know what actually had broken motion controls? Twilight Princess. Shield bashing and spin attacking was the most frustrating thing ever in that game. It was inexcusable considering those maneuvers are pretty important for beating the more advanced enemies.

I've talked with Mal and Icemage at length about that not being a real issue - they've convinced themselves its a major problem because NINTENDO.

that aside, here's one screen shown so far:

That's looking like a bit more than the usual HD uprez.

I wonder if they'll also keep with the recent trend of adding a live orchestra. So long as they keep the option for the old OST, I would rather like to hear a live take on Wind Waker.

I'm wondering if they'll re-add the 2 dungeons that got cut from the original Wind Waker and got replaced with the really dumb and obnoxious fetch quest at the end. That's really the only thing I really hold against Wind Waker.

Oh shit...I disappointed my little sister by saying I was buying a Vita instead of a Wii U (mostly because I always wait 12 months after a console have come out before buying one). She's going to murder me if she finds out about this. Wind Waker is one of her favourite Zelda games and she well into full on fangirl gushing mode when she unwrapped the copy of Skyward Sword I got her for Christmas.

So how long do you think I can keep this news from a 12 year old gamer girl?

Arguing that motion controls are a gimmick because they don't work for all games is like saying touch controls or gamepads or keyboard + mouse or arcade sticks are gimmicks because they don't work for all games.

They work for Skyward Sword, that's all that matters. Being able to choose from 9 different directions for your sword strikes added depth to the combat. Having to time your shielding and being able to select any of your 8 items in less than a second without pausing the game were also welcome additions.

The Skyward Sword controls were fine, I have no problem with them and my sister, a 12 year old has no problem with them.

The 3DS version of Ocarina of Time however...Yeah the slingshot and bow controls for that were pretty bullshit unless you played in a wide open space (which is completely counter intuitive for a handheld). I personally let that one slide though since it is a very early 3DS game and Nintendo's first crack at implementing such a control scheme.

I thought you could turn off the gyroscope controls?

You can but you run into the problems that the original PSP had in that the controls are still a bit awkward without a second analogue stick and the game isn't compatible with Circle Pad Pro. The Gyroscopic controls are a pain due to it being an "early days" thing but they are still more convenient than having to control the camera with just one analogue stick.

But the N64 didn't have a second analog stick either...? And when you pull out the slingshot or bow for first person aiming you're rooted to the ground anyways.

I just left the gyros on in OOT 3D for tweaking, otherwise using the circle pad in tandem with it. Didn't really have to move much with aiming bows or slingshots.

You have to keep in mind with Mal, any minor issue in any game is blown into hyperbole. I mean, just look at what a bastardization DmC was until he finally played it.
