    Re: Pokemon X/Y

Few important things to remember for the new game:
    • Grass-type Pokémon are no longer affected by moves such as Spore, Stun Spore, PoisonPowder or Sleep Powder (Spore is the most important one to remember)
    • Electric-type Pokémon can no longer be Paralyzed (Big buff to the typing in general)
    • Ghost-type Pokémon are no longer affected by moves that trap them such as Mean Look (They can still be nailed by Pursuit on the switch though so watch that)
    • Steel types no longer resist Ghost and Dark type moves.
    • Abilities that change the weather on a switch in now only cause the weather to change for 5 turns instead of being permanently on.
    • Spikes is now Ground Type rather than Normal Type
    • Mega Evolutions require the pokemon to be actually out before you evolve them. Switching also takes priority over it. It goes Switching > Mega Evolution > Priority Moves > Normal Moves
    • Charizard is still a liability because Stealth Rock wasn't nerfed. You'd better have Rapid Spin if you want to take advantage of Megazard X. (Or just be sensible and not use something with such a horrible defensive typing)

    Once again Fairy Typing info:
Strong Against: Fighting, Dragon and Dark
Resisted by: Fire, Poison and Steel
    Weak against: Poison and Steel
    Resists: Fighting, Bug, Dark
    Immune to: Dragon

A lot of older pokemon have also been given a huge buff by being given the Fairy Typing as a secondary. Most notably Mawile that also gets a Mega Evolution

Anybody know what general attributes Sylveon, the new fairy-type Eevee, has? One of new fairy types I'm using has strong Special Def., which sounds appropriate enough.

Interesting enough, I always wondered if they ought to make a different set of starters with Psychic, Dark, and Fighting type. What they did do was make that he secondary typings of the third stage forms. Grass/Fighting, Water/Dark, and Fire/Psychic.

So from what I understand of it - Chespin's final form - Chestnaught - ended up being the tank of the starter.

I want to get the game before the whole Torchic deal ends (though I'm sure I can just get one late) I thought if I started out with Chespin, Squirtle and Torchic I might have the best starters of each type.

Well, I still have a soft spot for Piplup, but that one doesn't seem to be in the cards right away.

I mentioned this elsewhere, if not here:

          Chespin evolves into a PLD.
          Fennekin evolves into a BLM.
          Froakie evolves into a NIN.

            Re: Pokemon X/Y

The frog is fucking awesome. It's other ability is Protean which changes its type to your last used move. They can also learn Water, Ice, Psychic, Dark, Bug, Flying, Ghost, Grass and Rock moves. Greninja also gets Spikes and Rapid Spin, plus due to having Dark Type STAB, can easily deal with most Spinblockers like Gengar or Jellicent. It also deals with any Starmie switch ins to blow away your hazards since it's pretty much guaranteed to get off a Super effective hit on Starmie before it can be pulled out. Basically it's pretty much guaranteed to be top tier due to the sheer coverage that it has.

Plus it's basically Jiraiya, who I named my Greninja after.

Honestly out of the new starters, the Frog standing out as awesome. Chestnaught I haven't seen much of. Fox dies pretty much instantly to Spikes and/or Stealth Rock though, due to the Spikes buff and it not really having any real way to recover from entry hazard damage and it having 5 Weaknesses (Ghost, Water, Rock, Ground, Dark) all of them VERY common.

Psychic, Dark, Fighting doesn't make a wheel like Fire, Water, Grass though due to Dark being flat out immune to one of them. The reason why Fire, Water, Gress is used is because it makes a perfect wheel with no immunities. Psychis, Dark, Fighting is basically Rock, Paper, Shotgun due to how overpowered Fighting types in general are. Toxicroak is the perfect example. Fighting/Poison so Psychic should dominate right? Nope, it learns Sucker Punch so the Psychic type is never going to land a blow.

The dual typings also does strange things to the wheel. Chesnaut will never beat the Fox due to no Sucker Punch but the Ninja can easily win the whole triangle by abusing Protean...Except it can also backfire spectacularly depending on the movepool that the Fox and Hedgehog have. If I'm honest I think Game Freak just said "Fuck it, let's do what is fun!" And you know what? It was the perfect call.

If you want a better wheel, let's go Fighting/Flying/Rock due to it not screwing things up with immunities, and the fact that most Fighting Types can learn Sucker Punch to laugh at the Fighting/Psychic/Dark wheel.

            As for Sylveon.

            Name: Sylveon
            Type: Fairy
Ability: Cute Charm / Pixilate (DW)
            Base Stats: 95 / 65 / 65 / 110 / 130 / 60

It's a very good mixed tank and basically trumps both Vaporeon and Umbreon in terms of Support.

It also has a very wide movepool, you can set it up as a Support Pokemon, or go for a Sub-Calm Mind build, or just go pure offence with Calm Mind. These seem to be the most promising movesets.

I read about that, still not too clear on it. Does the typing linger or is it only used for that instance as STAB? If the former, which typing changes? For example it'd be Grass/Dark if it uses a Grass move last?

                      Re: Pokemon X/Y

The Safari Zone expands depending on the number of friend codes you have. It also allows you to instantly add people you have a 3DS friend code of, all you need to do is to have some kind of interaction with then ingame. There's other stuff too like your friend's pokemon interacting with yours over Poke-Amie.

Friend Safari is awesome though, basically it gives your friend a random typing and that is what type of Pokemon you will find. It starts out with 3 Pokemon per area but it goes up once they have beaten the Elite Four. All Pokemon in that zone are also guaranteed to have at least two IVs of 31, which is going to make IV breeding a LOT easier. Great thing about Friend Safari is that any non-legendary can appear there. That includes Starter Pokemon from previous generations.

Oh yeah, it's also possible to use the online features anywhere ingame so you no longer need to find a Pokemon centre. They also added more stuff to the random matchup like Ranked Battles and also a "Wonder Trade" system where you can offer up a Pokemon and it trades it with the first random Person to have one up.

There's also things called O-Powers, they are temporary buffs that you can give to anyone on your Friends or "Passersby" List. Passers by takes anyone from Streetpass that has the game and shows you, or if you connect to the internet it pulls up everyone in the world currently connected. O-Powers are basically small buffs: Capture Rate, Prize Money, Stat Boosts etc you can send to people on those lists. The buffs rank up depending on how often you use them so you are encouraged to use them a lot since you can also give them to yourself.

A lot of the tweaks they added to the game have actually made me stop caring about a Pokemon MMO. X/Y has been showing me that it would be redundant really with the expanded online content the game has.

A Pokemon MMO would probably be horrible from a gaming perspective. It would take everything that's good and fun about Pokemon and gate it off behind time sinks way worse than breeding. I have no doubt it'd sell like crazy though.

My friends have hyped this game up so much it's unreal. I just got my copy of Y in the mail yesterday, so I'll find out tonight what the big deal is. All the changes I've heard so far have been very positive though.

Does X/Y use the same Friend Code as the 3DS? Doesn't seem to be a Pal Pad of sort to enter it in anywhere.

Same as the 3DS. All you need to do is interact with someone on your 3DS friends list once and you can instantly add them to your ingame friend list.

People who say they want a Pokemon MMO don't play MMOs and probably don't understand what they're asking for. Timesinks aside - of which Pokemon already has plenty - Pokemon is one of the few japanese RPGs out there that really embraces the idea of being really open-ended.

Just want to play through the story and play with your favorite pokemon? You can do that.
Into PVP? You can do that.
Want to just breed the little buggers and trade pokemon to your little heart's content? You can do that.
Just want to participate in Pokemon beauty pageants and collect outfits? You can do that.
Just want to explore? You can do that.

As it stands, Pokemon is MMO-ish enough, adding things like endgame Leagues for players to join, lead and control would poison the well much in the same way letting a noob lead an endgame guild in any MMO already does. Pokemon's competitive community is already a bit elitist as it is (see: LOL@FireType) - let's not enable them further.

Letting those people in would inflict a "right" way to play through the main story, to breed, to trade, to do pageants and kill exploration. You'd have loads more people advising others how to play any corner of the game through the lens of Battle Frontier and PVP content. Fuck that.

As wide as the appeal is for this series, I don't want the magic of this series ruined for kids. Turning Pokemon into an MMO would be like cancelling Christmas.

Pretty much this, with the expanded multiplayer functions of X/Y, it pretty much as an MMO anyway. While it would be fun to see the Demon Souls style world entry thing that BW1 and BW2 had, the stuff they added to XY more than make up for that being gone.

I would personally love to be able to physically enter a friend's game and help them out in Double Battles and whatnot, but I guess the stupidly fast Trading and the new O-powers kind of makes that unnecessary.

Trading, they made a couple of small tweaks that made it fucking awesome. First of all you can do it anywhere in the world now, you no longer need to get to a Pokemon Centre (same with battles now too). Second, you can also pick Pokemon in storage to trade as well, so not more screwing around with the PC to make sure you have the right Pokemon. Finally, they made it MUCH faster. It's pretty much instant now.
