Complains there there are no rental places nearby.

Finds out that there is a rental place nearby and refuses to go there.

It's a shitty little movie redbox (that might have a game or 2, haven't actually looked at it in ages) that's inside the front lobby of a Food Basics.

Yeah Mal knows I'm just trolling him which is why my posts poke fun at him without a malicious intent.

Re: "Sony Patent Could Stop Used Games on Playstation 4"

For what it's worth, I'm pretty sure Sony's smart enough not to implement anything along these lines, and on the plus side having a large corporation holding that sort of patent keeps anyone else from trying anything similarly stupid (silver linings from idiotic patent laws? I suppose.)

At any rate, Sony already has extensive (albeit imperfect) DRM with respect to online DRM activation, which appears to work "ok" for what it's intended to do. Doing this sort of clamping down on used games gains them nothing beyond what they're already getting except pushing people to other entertainment platforms because of the inconvenience factor, so all the panic mode seems rather premature until we get a good look at whatever the PS4 configuration looks like. The only way I could see Sony actually getting behind this sort of technology is if they wanted to spearhead a push for all-digital (a la iTunes and PSP Go). Given how horribly the PSP Go went down in flames, and how tenacious PS Vita owners have been over having physical copies, plus their quite large investment in the Blu-ray format, I don't see how anyone could make an argument that they're somehow going to drown their own baby (Blu-ray) just to gamble on maaaybe getting some favors from publishers and developers at the cost of customer satisfaction.

It only pushes consumers towards other competitors if they don't also follow suit; That's the scary hypothetical in all this, because if Sony did do this, I can see a lot of publishers rallying behind them to support it as it will mean more money for them.

But I give that scenario a 20, 30% chance of happening tops. I sincerely doubt Sony & others are really willing to piss off Gamestop & other retailers that severely (and drive more people towards Steam/Origin).

In theory it would definitely be advantageous to publishers and developers on a per-sale basis, but the big problem is that it's so blantantly anti-consumer that it would take some sort of serious cultural pushback against used game sales to offset what would obviously happen: consumers would go to whatever formats that still maintained the value of their purchase.

No one really cares if GameStop lives or dies except their employees; lazy people who are looking to "make a quick buck" off games they've purchased or otherwise acquired will be inconvenienced, but there's always ebay and Glyde and Amazon and pawn shops and all manner of other ways of disposing of used games if you choose to do so. Maybe not as much instant gratification, and maybe not quite as much money, but the resources are still there no matter what happens to GameStop.

Sony does some incomprehensible things at times, but they're not in a position these days to be that arrogant, especially against something which has only questionable impact against their bottom line and so clearly serves other purposes for them (see my comment regarding Blu-ray above).

Right now Sony has a commanding reason to keep Blu-ray alive, even if they aren't the largest stakeholder: internet bandwidth still isn't convenient enough for the majority of people to download the average 5+GB game in a reasonable timespan. Many people still don't have broadband, let alone connections that are stable / fast / uncapped enough to absorb that sort of data traffic on a semi-regular basis. Unless they've taken complete leave of their senses, they're not going to jeopardize that advantage by doing something that would upset that apple cart.

Actually, I'm told that you generally get more money from used games by going to one of those "alternate" sources instead of to Gamestep, FWIW.
