    Re: Wii U Discussion

Hmm, I wouldn't expect them to be much higher than $350, $400 tops but even that is really pushing it.

And I'm still right in my assessment - the system itself isn't that expensive, it's the stupid tablet controller that brings the price so high (yes I know it's an integral part of it but that's not the point I'm making) as there's no way they could justify the cost otherwise; The technical specs are only just at parity with the 360, maybe a little better visually though it has a very slow processor (which we already discussed - however the system apparently has ways of working around that limitation, kind of like how Cell got around PS3's "low" memory)

The stupid tablet controller on it's own is like what, $125 here? (almost $200 in Japan).

      Re: Wii U Discussion

I'm still wondering why you insist this controller is "stupid."

Its a traditional controller with some additional input methods. Why do games have to be limited to two analog sticks, two analog clicks, a D-pad and eight analog buttons. We've been here for three generations now and that scheme is starting to show its age, forcing developers to shove additional contextual functions on to the same button in certain games. Meanwhile a game so hot-key dependent would sing on PC on the Wii U GamePad because they don't have those limits.

It's horribly expensive and is just begging for a kid to break it? Granted, I can't contest to how sturdy it is (and Nintendo generally builds stuff to last) but honestly, a $125 CONTROLLER!

Even if it is central to the platform... just no. Plus there's the fact that you can only use 1 per game.

          but honestly, a $125 CONTROLLER!
Which is less expensive than a DS/3DS, and plenty of kids get those. The controller's not gonna leave the house.

That aside I'm not sure where the $125 is coming from. I thought Nintendo wasn't selling replacements?
Plus there's the fact that you can only use 1 per game.
Really? Really? Who cares. If you're concerned about the controller breaking (which is lol), you're not gonna ask anyone else to bring it over to your house. The whole point is asymmetric gameplay; if you wanted a 4 player game with everyone having a screen on the controller you'd just sync up to the 3DS.

No that's what the initial pricing was listed as on several sites (estimated at $172 USD in Japan but reduced for NA) according to Kotaku, Destructoid, and multiple other sources. I can't even find the thing being sold separately anywhere so can't 100% confirm that but I don't see any reason not to believe it given the specs on it.

Good for Nintendo. "Oh. You broke the controller that only comes with the system? BUY NEW SYSTEM."

You only pay $300 for the Wii U?

Nintendo Wii U 8GB Basic Pack - White: Amazon.co.uk: PC & Video Games

We are paying $390 for the Basic Package

                  The premium package?

Nintendo Wii U 32GB Premium Pack - Black: Amazon.co.uk: PC & Video Games

We're paying $488 for the thing. it's the cheapest "Modern" console at launch and Americans are still whining at the price of the thing while we're paying even more.

If you don't want your $300 Wii U's then we will fucking take them.

It's around the same price you're paying in the U.K. (if not more) in Japan.

I always assumed $350 or $400 would be the highest it went, so i wasn't flustered when it turned out to $300 and $350. Relieved, actually.

Considering PS3 launced at $599, this is reasonable. I believe my launch PS2 was $300 so spoiled much?

Eh, the Sega CD was like $500 when it launched rofl... And it was a gigantic monstrosity.

Also, again, I'd like to point out that if Kutaragi had his way the PS3 would have been $800 (but also a lot more powerful).

I'm not going and putting in the links, you guys can google that yourselves but the info's all there - the control is an estimated $172 when converted from Yen to USD. What Nintendo ultimately decides to charge for them, IF they ever sell them separately from the console (which they currently do not) is up in the air. Keeping in mind it's basically a HD tablet, so I wouldn't bet on it being less than $100~120.

Are they region controlled? If not it could be possible to set up some sort of agreement (paypal, etc.) to buy one here and ship it to you if it would be cheaper. I'm a trusting soul.

$99 doesn't sound right at all. The standalone GamePad in Japan retails for ¥13,440. By current conversion rates, that's roughly $160 USD. Japanese pricing does tend to be higher, but not 60% higher.

For reference the retail price for the basic Wii U in Japan is ¥26,250 ($312 USD, +4% from US pricing of $300) and the deluxe edition is ¥31,500 ($375 USD, +7% from US pricing of $350).

If we assume a roughly 5% markup on the Japanese price, that would peg the standalone GamePad controller at about $150.
