    Re: Wii U Discussion

Tablets and Smartphones also have that whole Star Trek appeal about them that that sort of tech has. You know the "I'm streaming a movie onto something that could fit into my jeans pocket" thing. You know, basically this:

The whole "It's cool" factor that Smartphones and Tablets have is also something you really can't ignore.

The problem with those games are that the input system is very different from the system they were originally developed for. Sure, let's suppose that you can perfectly emulate the precision and speed of a gaming mouse (I highly doubt this is true now, but let's just go with this scenario) - you just can't emulate the keyboard command of hot buttons. Both your hands will end up in weird pretzels trying to "finesse" your gaming experience.

So, obviously, it would only be supplement to existing technologies or technologies that have yet to become commercially available. Take Google Glasses, for example, with future prototypes interfacing directly into the human neural network, and coupled with a portable "Kinect" system. Of course, this doesn't take into account the societal ramifications regarding both the etiquette and the ethics of such devices in public, or even in some private settings.

Agreed. I think the solution is to embrace the Bluetooth mouse and keyboard and provide the touchscreen as a fallback.

Point and click isn't really all that different from drag and touch. Baldur's Gate would play out largely the same as it did before on a tablet.

Sonic the Hedgehog with a software D-pad and buttons, however, loses a great deal of its appeal. Need I even mention Capcom's recent Mega Man X iOS abominations?

Certain games that have very simple controls or games which require taking turns (e.g., strategy, RPG, board games) are quite viable on today's mobile platform. Games which requires a myriad variety of input commands in a stream of succession are not currently viable on mobile platforms. So, quite a bit of PC games out there aren't going to see a smooth port anytime and will likely see scratch-built titles instead.

Tactile input is also tricky in light of the fragility and response of today's touchscreens. This will likely improve but by how much? No, physical contact through tactile sensories are becoming more and more obsolete as they are simply a refinement of the age-old typewriter/keyboard system. Wait until advancements are made with neural devices/implants, motion and voice recognition - that is where the future of entertainment lies. Afterall, there is no bigger gaming platform than the 'net, and that's also where most of the money will be.

                      Re: Wii U Discussion

So, I got me a Wii U. My NNID is InquisitiveCoder if anyone feels like adding me to their Friends List. Just let me know about it so I don't think it's some random person on the net.

Anyone have any experience with digital purchases of retail games? It's got some drawbacks, but I figure I won't experience most of them (there's no one here I'd lend/trade games with, and I've never sold a game in my life). And thinking ahead 20 or 30 years, I think I'd feel safer knowing my games are on a hard drive than praying the Wii U's optical drive never wears out.

I'm mostly curious if there's a noticeable difference in load times. Using a hard drive was a LOT faster on the Wii, but I don't know how fast the Wii U's optical drive is. I'm also wondering if you get a digital version of the game's instruction booklet.

                        Re: Wii U Discussion

The only catch I think buying digital for Wii U is that once you format an external HDD for it, it can't be used or read by a PC. Since they're using a proper account system, digital purchases should be more secure than they were for Wii.

Since i don't own a Wii U yet and that's all I do know of it, I can't say much more, but I've always found the digital instruction manual to be a highly variable thing with publishers. Most of them don't even print a proper manual for physical games anymore.

                          Re: Wii U Discussion

So I almost bought a Wii U on Monday. Purely because it was mind boggling that a "new" (and I use that word loosely) gen system was so cheap.

                                Re: Wii U Discussion

It is "relatively" inexpensive for a new console looking at recent history. The GameCube($199) and Wii($249) launched at lower price points, and the Xbox 1 launched at $299, but I don't really see how this break's Nintendo's pattern at all. They always try to find inexpensive parts that make for a good experience, and they generally do a pretty good job of that. One has to assume that both Microsoft and Sony's new hardware will be at least $300 at launch. There's some rumors floating around that Microsoft is trying to get down to $300 for a launch price, but I've no idea how much credence to give those rumors.
