So, I just bought the game and am looking forward to hitting it up when I get home. I know Mal has got it going and the only reaction I've heard from him so far is that the opening scene / music is epic. How's the new battle system? Similar to how it used to be, but new? Do you like it better or indifferent?

Re: Assassin's Creed 3, comments and feedback on gameplay, storyline, etc...
Just got home after a (needlessly) long day out...
The gun combat is annoying - but also fitting. I mean, it's 18th century firearms and so you really do have to perform the stupid old-fashioned reloading that takes forever LOL but otherwise the combat is greatly improved. They seem to have finally fixed the awkward jumping as well, so no more weird jumping off in the wrong direction when you're climbing.
But you can pick up & drop weapons while moving now, and countering is a little more intuitive - you can still counter attack, but it doesn't necessarily kill (according to the devs anyway - I've killed every enemy so far but then I'm only still in the very beginning) and you have a few options for counters now. You can counter & throw, disarm, or kill. They also added in a new attack that allows you to break an enemy's defenses and potentially disarm them outright.
AI companions are competent in fights as well, which is refreshing. But again, the guns are a little cheesy - I mean, I was able to fire on 1 guy on a roof during the mission, stand there out in the open reloading my gun, and then shoot the next guy on the roof dead as well. lol wut?
I'm hoping the Red Coats actually put up a decent fight. Also, Ben Franklin's voice seems off to me somehow - I dunno, I always envisioned him with a bit of a different voice. However, the guy playing him and the lines are still superb - they've got him down to the letter and I love it! Hoping to see the other founding fathers as well (we know Washington's in it, but I'd like to actually see Jefferson & the others as well).

Re: Assassin's Creed 3, comments and feedback on gameplay, storyline, etc...
I remember the jumping issues, man that was annoying. And it would always happen in a timed event where you needed to jump off one roof onto a wire going to another roof with 30 secs left and you jump to the right instead of in the direction you wanted and you miss the rope, hit the ground, adn then lose the mission and need to start over. That jumping issue was a major pain...
I hope they address the ease of which you could kill anyone by calling your assassins. That was a major drawbck from the last game. You hide behind a building, call your assassins, and killl whatever you wanted to. Way too over powered... Or you're running from roof top to roof top, someone guards are in your way, call the assassins and poof, dead.75: Sam, Nin, Blm, Thf, Pld, Cor, Rdm

Re: Assassin's Creed 3, comments and feedback on gameplay, storyline, etc...
Oh, this is perhaps the single biggest improvement of all.
They have FINALLY fixed the problem with check points. Unlike in the last 3 fucking games, you can finally go back to your last checkpoint if you accidentally void the optional objectives AND NOT HAVE TO RESTART THE DAMN MISSION! God how I hated that. It's about damned time they fixed that problem. No more screwing up by accident during a mission and then having to redo the entire thing from scratch.
Still no non-lethal take downs though, which continues to bugger me during certain missions. Why did Deus Ex and Dishonored get this right, but AC continues to force you into the occasional "don't kill X NPC(s)" without any option to take them out non-lethally. because apparently assassins can't be bothered to choke someone out and would rather try their luck dodging the gaze of multiple guards.

I'm having issues with the gun as well... It seems like the game will auto-aim it for you and highlight an NPC for you to shoot then you can hit the triangle button to fire, and to aim you hit L1 and then while holding down L1 you hit the triangle to fire. It will take some getting used to. The long delay in the guns will tkae some gettin used to as well, but once i find some throwing knives, guns won't be needed so meh.75: Sam, Nin, Blm, Thf, Pld, Cor, Rdm

Mal, I've done like 3-4 missions from the mainland and I'm not finding a shop for buying weapons. I think I might have accidentally turned the filter off from the map, I'm still kind of haivng issues using the map. HAs there been more weapons and armor available up through the first 5 missions or so, or has it been strictly the sword and the gun you buy when you first land?75: Sam, Nin, Blm, Thf, Pld, Cor, Rdm
