    PlayStation 'master key' leaked online

Crucial security information about the Sony PlayStation 3 has been leaked online, making it easier for users to play pirated games on the machine.

Unlocking games consoles is a common way for users to open up the system, but in the past, such efforts have been quickly thwarted.

This hack is equivalent to stealing a master key, say experts.

It comes as Sony heard that one of the mass lawsuits brought against it in the US had been dismissed by the judge.

Access to the inner workings of a games console means people can utilise its huge computing power in novel ways.

For example, the United States Air Force has networked 1,700 PS3s to create a powerful supercomputer.

But often the unlocking - called jailbreaking - is seen as a means to allow users to play pirated games.

The hackers behind the publication of the so-called LVO decryption keys call themselves The Three Musketeers.

They say that they decided to release the information after it was leaked and fell into the hands of Chinese hackers who had planned to charge a fee for the code.

In a statement published on The Hacker News, the group said: "You can be sure that if it wouldn't have been for this leak, this key would never have seen the light of day, only the fear of our work being used to make money out of it has forced said us to release this now."

Writing about the hack, Eurogamer said: "Options Sony has in battling this leak are limited - every PS3 out there needs to be able to decrypt any firmware download package in order for the console to be updated.

"The reveal of the LVO key basically means that any system update released by Sony going forward can be decrypted with little or no effort whatsoever."
'Perfect security' In the past efforts to jailbreak the PS3 have been countered with the release of firmware able to resecure the console.

Source close to the firm say they are not convinced that the latest hack is any more serious that past ones. An official statement from the console maker is due shortly.

In better news for Sony, a US judge has thrown out a mass lawsuit brought by users of the PlayStation Network, following a huge security breach in May 2011 which saw the user information of 69 million customers exposed.

The suit accused Sony of failing to adequately protect information and exposing users to identity theft.

Judge Battaglia from the US District Court of Southern California pointed to a clause in the user agreement which noted that "there was no such thing as perfect security" and said that the disclaimers meant there were no grounds for the lawsuits.

The plaintiffs have until 9 November to appeal against the decision.

So I guess this means we're going to get even more updated forced down our throats by Sony...

That's what happens when you try to close your system in order to gauge prices through regional vendors in the first place.

I hope they are at least mature enough to open things up and profit from it instead of going into paranoid-mode and messing things up even further. You fight piracy by giving a better service and fair prices, not through retarded last century DRMs.

Ray, this is Sony we're talking about. Sensible ideas are not allowed.

I agree with Dak ... no one mentions the TJ Max fiasco and that was probably a bigger event (cause, you know, people actually have money in that one) and the media seems to have forgotten all about just how much data the Air Force lost (not to mention if equipment was sabotaged) in their own security breach last year (thru a malicious trojan) I already replied in Ars thread over this incident. There's so many circles and intersections of compromised data all over the internet that I would find it difficult to believe that you can correlate fraud perpetrated on your credit card from a PSN security breach. Thieves are slipping in swipe capturing devices in ATMs all over Eastern Europe for crying out loud.

Aeni read the post again. It's not a security breach, it's the console itself being hacked. I'm dyslexic and I still had no trouble with reading that.

I immediately thought of the Ars article just yesterday and thought it was related. Sorry about that. >_<

Here's the article at Ars that correlates to this one: Sony faces setback as hackers release PlayStation 3 decryption keys | Ars Technica

The one I saw yesterday was this one: Judge: Sony didn’t promise “perfect security,” isn’t liable for PSN hack | Ars Technica

I always found this argument funny only because after homebrewing my Wii I kind of actually [and sadly] get their point: people do this sh*t not to establish their right over their product, they simply do it to simply play hacked, modded games so they don't have to pay for it. And yes it's not 100% but I'm sure it's pretty close to that and yeah you CAN argue that games shouldn't be that much either. But people seem to ignore you wouldn't get good games like Borderlands, Elder Scrolls or Fallout without the budget that comes from what you pay AND even if they discounted the game you'd still be suckered into expansion maps, extra items, etc.

It's like buying a PC and the reality between the consumer and manufacturer is so distorted its like a play:
Consumer: I want a PC that does it all!
Manufacturer: So what did you want?
Consumer: Oh wait I also want to spend as little as possible so is $300 good enough?
Manufacturer: (really who the f**k is this d**k?) Sorry sir/ma'am it's gonna cost more...

That's who we are, we want to pay as little as possible and no I'm not white knighting when I say, just pay for your sh*t people and that's it. Do you really, honestly think Sony would be out to waste their money encrypting a system if they didn't think enough people were modding it to get their stuff for free? Hey I think theaters are over-priced but I just do the matinee for $5 instead of seeing it at night and paying $18.50.

...Ready for any "hitler" comments or flames lol~

He's got a good point though, it's a very small minority that actually uses homebrew for what it was intended for.

Didn't mean to sound like I was yelling Aeni. Made that post at midnight after a nightmarish day at work.

Also there is this comment just to play Devil's Advocate:

Where your logic really fails is the part where Sony removes paid for features, not for the customers benefit, but to offset some made up reason as to why their games are not selling so well, (that may not be the real reason but it seems like it to me). I really don't like my property being stolen from me. I paid for my shit and Sony took it back. Where is the justice in that. And by the way, I don't remember being informed that an update would brick my system. Sony is receiving their justice.
Mal: I jailbroke my iPhone to install additional security software to protect my privacy, something that Apple does a shit job of. That and I was pissed that iOS 5 also rended a massive number of ths gons that I legitimately purchased from iTunes completely unplayable on my iPhone whereas jailbreaking my phone allowed me to fix that problem and allow me to continue to listen to the music collection that I bought from it. Also having a fully region free store is really nice when jaibreaking an iPhone means you can buy stuff from non-Apple app stores.

My PS3, PSP and 3DS are hacked so I can play imported, region locked JRPGs that get released in the US, which inevitably don't sell and then the publishers use that as an excuse to deny the entire rest of the world the game because *gasp!* an RPG didn't well well in a country where RPGs don't sell well! Then there's also the bullshit excuse of region locking games because "oh but customer service for regions wah, wah, wah *whinge* *cry*" when in reality they're only doing it because Japanese companies in general are too fucking scared to even take a risk or even attempt to compete.

But but but! If we didn't region lock our products, how would we take advantage of differences in currency values?
