  • Konami has asked Kojima to make a Silent Hill game

Konami has asked Hideo Kojima to helm Silent Hill -Destructoid

Its so crazy it might actually work, particularly since part of his team at Kojima productions used to be Team Silent.

Nothing is planned right now, but its still such a good idea. I think they should just reboot the whole franchise around such a game.

I've been lead to believe that Hideo Kojima is very bad at writing. If this is the case then I think he'd be a terrible fit for Silent Hill, as it seems to be a franchise that is all very much about the writing.

BBQ, how incorrect are my assumptions in this case?

Where should I begin? The part where your only frame of reference is MGS or the idea that the writing was the thing that made SH good? Do I really even have to go beyond pointing out those two things anyway? Kojima's gameplay designs are often quite sound and story is never the only part of what makes survival horror what it is.

        *shrug*

All I heard was an announcement of "hey let's get that guy who likes overly verbose dialog and excessive cutscenes to make a game about soul-crushing dread and atmosphere" and thought to myself: 'that sounds like a bit of a mismatch'. Clearly I'm missing some information here, so instead of being an ass how about you enlighten me as to why he's such a good fit for the franchise.

Re: Konami has asked Kojima to make a Silent Hill game

          (1) Despite being a film buff, he dislikes horror movies because they really do scare him. Those people tend to make the best scary stuff.
          (2) Kojima Productions are often polished to a mirror sheen in gameplay and presentation.
          (3) FOX Engine is looking great, it would create some really creepy environments.
          (4) Kojima is a loremaster - his stories are comic bookish and convoluted, but they're built on a strong foundation of lore, historical events, trivia and things like that.
          (5) Suvival Horror is enhanced more by lore than story and cinematics (despite what contemporary RE and SH tell you).

That aside, Kojima is very deliberate in everything he does. Sure, it can be hard to keep up with but since the foundation would lore more than direct cinematic, he could really make things spooky that way, to say nothing of strong environmental design and gameplay.

MGS4 was a unique challenge because the environment was generally against Snake rather than his perpetual ally like it was in other MGS games. MGS3 was actually enhanced by its survivalist elements even if they were a bit too easy at times. So between those two games, there's a lot of draw survival horror ideas from, you'd just have to apply them to the mindfuck that is Silent Hill and that's within Kojima's grasp.

Psycho Mantis, for example. Fake video restarts, reading your memory card - stuff like that. He loves to fourth wall and that kind of fourth-walling actually worked for games like Eternal Darkness.

Re: Konami has asked Kojima to make a Silent Hill game

I dunno, mew. It's like expecting Hiyashi to make a worthy Fatal Frame. or Nomura trying to make a worthy Tomb Raider. It's uncharted territory for that developer that is entirely known for MGS. That's their own expertise and atmosphere they are good at. The only sure thing they could do with Silent Hill is attract more interest and sales based on their name and MGS reputation. But I think Vatra Games understand Silent Hill more. I mean admit it, mew, if Silent Hill 8 was labeled with "Team Silent" being involved, it would automatically receive more sales. There's really no guarantee they would do a Silent Hill right. Also Kojima is to blame for convincing Konami to accept those idiots that betrayed Castlevania (Lords of Shadow) They twisted the franchise into something incompatible and too different. It's like that whole DmC disaster, mew. Fans want a DMC 5, not a experimental reboot/spinoff of the series Silent Hill doesn't need a reboot, it can introduce new characters/story

            - - - Updated - - -

But that being said, I read that Kojima would share FOX engine and maybe help supervise it, so that could be helpful for SH, and actually better than if Kojima completely directed it/wrote it. but ya who knows, mew. Maybe Kojima would be better writing it than someone that may be less qualified.

I never thought story was the strongest point in any survival horror anything. As long as he can keep it cheesy and entertaining, that's more than enough to sell to the masses.

Re: Konami has asked Kojima to make a Silent Hill game

"Cheesy" is kinda saved for the tail end of Silent Hill games. The bulk of it is someone going through their own personal hell in a space that seems to have a connection to some fucked up demon dimension and they either face their issues or die. I mean, Silent Hill 2 alone has some massively fucked up and disturbed shit in it. I'm talking Shutter Island fucked up, but with pale rotting faceless nurses and pyramid heads.

Or the protagonist get kidnapped by a UFO at the end. That's also a thing, but its WTF stuff like that really makes Kojima perfect fo the job.

Actually, those nurses are like nightmare fuel for me. Attractive bodies but extremly pale, practically rotting andcovered in gore with flesh for hair and no faces... ew. I'd rather take my chances with the pyramid heads.

I mean, who better to revive a dying series that's traditionally been all about being utterly batshit crazy, then their #1 guy who is also batshit crazy? ^_^

Re: Konami has asked Kojima to make a Silent Hill game

SH2 has more symbolism in it than any game I have ever seen before or since, period. I could honestly write an essay or dissertation on it >_>

Personally I think the Dog ending is more messed up than the UFO - the UFO is just funny, always has been.

EDIT: In 1 3 and 5 (Homecoming), it's all because of the demonic cult and their demon lord samael or whatever. (I guess the PSP game counts too, since it's a prequel to 1). 4's not officially "canon" as it wasn't even a SH game to begin with, it just had the name tacked on afterwards. I won't mention Shattered Memories because, well, that would be spoiling the entire plot. 2 was the only game where the town itself is fucked up, I guess 8 (downpour) as well since there was no cult in 8 either. The town was just messed up (seriously, that mail man is CREEPY AS HELL I love him - he's like if morgan freeman were put into a Nightmare on Elm Street movie, but as a friendly guide oblivious and impervious to the town's sinister shit).

I'll spare the details on 2's symbolism, only because it all ties in to major spoilers and the central theme of the plot. Suffice to say, literally every enemy in the game except Pyramid Head & the Doorman boss is feminine, and not just feminine - they're meant to be sexy (yet beaten up) and have no face. Hell, the first time you see Pyramid Head he's raping one of the dolls... I was like 14 or 15 when I saw that, late at night while over at a friend's house (i'd only rented the PS2 then and brought it with me) and we all promptly decided I should just save the game and end it there before things got even more screwed up ROFL.

Priceless f'ing memory, I absolutely SH2 and I hate that the remake basically is garbage compared to the original, even with the patch.

Fortunately they are nurses, if they had been Japanese maids I would've been killed so fast.

                          *ehem*

I think Kojima should make at the very least a tech demo with a small part of SH2's town.

The Japanese tend to see the beauty in everything ... including rotting corpses. However, I would deem that depiction of a "zombie" to be nothing more than a hyper-sexualized fantasy with a sprinkle of the macabre and maybe some deep-rooted pathological fantasy. There's more than one way to skin this genre. You can go for the realism (and the angle of "horror" through the lens of gratuitous violence and a primal fear of death), you can go for the surreal (like what is depicted above) with a slant towards current cultural trends (e.g., hyper sexualization of a subject) or you can go for the a free-for-all, like Suda51 did, or a handful of others have done before him and continue to do so now.

I just want decompression in my video game. There's plenty of books for profound literature and plenty of movies to flex your noodle or obsess about a particular actress or actor. And a whole lot of B grade nonsense to veggie over a lonely, rainy weekend ...

So it turns out, Silent Hill is a virtual plane created by the "fog", which are in fact swarms of nano-machines.

But seriously, I'd be pretty hyped if he accepts.
