  • Tracklist for "The Greatest Video Game Music 2"

"The Greatest Video Game Music" probably isn't the title I would've given the first or this second album. But eh, it's game music played by the London Philharmonic.

Happy about the choice for "Fate of the Unknown" though. Rather than "Not Hikari AGAIN".

Shame that it's just an album, I wouldn't mind going to see that but oh well.

Meh at Fate of the Unknown. Its a fine song, but personally like Enter the Darkness a lot better. Not only is it a great battle theme, but it incorporates other character themes into it that tie back into Vanitas.

I assume the title just refers to track 9.

Incredibly glad that links don't work on this computer. I assume BBQ is trolling me by posting a video of the song/CS

Re: Tracklist for "The Greatest Video Game Music 2"

I'd forgotten all about that part...

Now, I like Diablo 3's overture, but... I dunno, there's a lot of tracks I can think of I'd rather see than what are on this list. Halo 3's "never forget" is a nice touch though. Damn I love Marty's music - ODST was probably his best work. Seriously, ignore the fact that it was by far the worst of the Halo games and just listen to the music from it - it's fantastic. Really sad that he and Michael won't be at 343 but the new guy is pretty solid as well. Neon Night would have been a nice choice for a piece to do.

WTF they went with Death's Theme over Vampire Killer or Bloody Tears? Hell, nearly every track on SotN's OST deserves to be in there for that matter. I'd nominate Lament of Innocence (Leon's theme) however (since The Tragic Prince requires electric guitars and this is an orchestra) since it's a really great theme that fits with the instruments they have.

I've always wanted to see Gates of Hell played at one of SE's concerts though....

I love these lists ... they seem to incite the inner-fanboi in everyone.

I personally don't like what's on the list either but I doubt my opinion would mean anything to more than a few people, if at that.

Pretty much this. My personal list would look very different from their choices. Then again, this is the London Philharmonic so they're obviously going to tilt to music that suits their symphonic instrument blend (with the sole bizarre inclusion of Jonathan Coulton's Still Alive - which I adore, but seriously where the hell is Baba Yetu from Civ 4?).

Man, One-Winged Angel is in like every fucking video game orchestra performance. Play! A Video Game Symphony even showed the end of Advent Children while it played. I'd kill to hear the Super Metroid segment though. EDIT: And Sonic the Hedgehog too.

I actually think there are some pretty good picks here

Skyrim had a lot of good stuff, there's actually three and a half hours of music in that game. "Far Horizons" is a pretty nice, somber piece to toss in the mix. Wind Waker's soun track tends to be underrated and "Dragon Roost Island" is another nice non-traditional pick. Most would have gone with the title theme or "Outset Island" but "Dragon Roost Island" is actually a pretty unique track. Mass Effect 3's "An end for once and for all" is probably the instant classic of this year despite being attach ed to the endings it was and Deus Ex's "Icarus" theme is a nice compliment to it. Both probably would have fit into Blade Runner if given the chance. Anything from Super Metroid also works.

"Still Alive" and "One Winged Angel" are the only real super-cliched choices I see here. I would have done "Want you Gone" or "Vilify" instead of "Still Alive." As for "One Winged Angel" I would have replaced it with Persona 3's "Battle for Everyone's Souls." It could stand toe-to-toe with "One Winged Angel" rather easily.

Batman doesn't really belong there and Arkham City's OST was pretty derivative of past Batman fare. As for Sonic, I don't imagine a lot of the old FM synthesis stuff would translate over well, but then, the Etrian Odyssey composer has moved all this FM stuff over to symphonic performances and it sounds great. Most of the Sonic stuff I like dosn't seem to jibe with the idea, stuff like this:

Were I really to add anything, I'd toss in a nod to modern retro classic Cave Story since Fez is already there. I think that would work out quite well.

That Cave Story tribute was awesome. I agree that Sonic Colors is pretty hard to work into a symphony, it's just too electronic/pop. Sonic Rush is also a no-go. The Genesis songs can definitely be done though.
