Nintendo Japan's Wii U announcements are going down right now.

    Wii U launching on December 8, 2012 in Japan, $335 & $400 -Destructoid

As usual, fanboys that forget the yen-to-dollar conversion ratio are going apeshit, but this more or less confirms last weeks rumor of the $250-$350 price range options if the conversion rates hold. The difference being there are two packages instead of the rumored three. A Premium model with more internal memory, two stands (for the controller and console and a two-year premium membership to the premium tier of Nintendo Network, which sounds a lot like PS+ on PSN. Members will get a 10% discount on digital purchases and other deals.

So basically, the premium tier of the network will be as useless as PS+ generally is. Depending on the US price, I may or may not get the premium for the other stuff at least. Two years of premium membership - while arguably useless, is still better than nothing i suppose.

The WiiPad is $172, but probably more like $125. Still pricy, so be careful with that one. Comes with a AC Adapter for charging, too. I'll make sure not to drop this in the bathtub.

Pro Controller is in the 360 controller price range.

Games are falling within the $40 to $60 dollar range in terms of US prices. Disappointing the $60 mark could be there, but the $40 point existing at launch for some games does add some pressure to third parties that think they're special, I guess.

Wii U has 2GB of RAM, 1GB higher than the rumored estimate. The proprietary disc format holds 25GB.

There will be 32GB internal flash storage for the Premium version, you can also use a HDD of your choosing, external HDDs, USB thumbdrives and SD card support, so that's a nice range of storage options. Idiots, as usually are complaining about the number of confusing options open to them.

BC for Wii games, there will be Wiimote and nunchuck bundles re-released for Wii and Wii U games compatible to them

Wiiware and Virtual Console games will be transferrable from the Wii to the Wii U. (lolSony)

New Super Mario Bros U is indeed a launch title so yay Mario finally making launch after three pieces of hardware where he didn't. Nintendo Land, like Wii Sports before it, actually isn't bundled in Japan. Probbaly will be in the US, we'll know the details of the US launch at 10am EST.

I'll update the third party japanese stuff in a bit, the presentation for that is said to be later on today.

Re: Sept. 13th Wii U news stuff

    * Pricing is in line with expectations. $299 for US baseline.

    * Is the internal memory a solid state drive, or just generic flash memory? At any rate, might have been smarter to increase the base storage to 16GB The storage size is going to be a (small) issue because it will probably indirectly limit the size of digital downloads (see: XBLA size limitation due primarily to the base level Xbox 360 having 4GB internal memory). Typical disc-based game downloads are already in the 6-10GB range, based on the handful of games I've gotten on PSN, and that figure will probably bump up with the next generation of games. Having a baseline set at 8GB means it's likely that Nintendo will not allow some games to be digitally downloaded simply because some users will be too clueless to know they need more memory.

    * $172 for a WiiPad? Even after adjusting for non-Japan pricing, that still comes out to probably $125-$150. I was personally expecting $100. They'd better hope kids aren't going to throw those things in frustration or they're going to have some very angry customers. Is there a mention of the NA pricing for the controller?

    * Nice amount of memory available. Means there's room for growth in the operating system (aside from the obvious benefit for games).

    * Nintendo Network Premium does seem like PS+ (more or less). Not a bad thing since it's optional. Too early to compare them yet.

I was about to roll my eyes at this Nitnendo TVii things, but its takes Netflix, Hulu Plus, Tivo, YouTube, cable packages and Amazon Prime and integrates them all into one interface, adds social networking into it, wiki search and the TVii app is totally free, so it all runs off your existing subscriptions.

Bayonetta 2 was just annouced as an exclusive, published by Nintendo.

Project P-100 is now The Wonderful 101

Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate coming to Wii U and 3DS, cross platform compatible, to boot.

Also, this was metioned early, but premium members get points toward new digital purchases on top of the discount they get as members. I can get behind that more easily than PSN's bogus "free" PSN games. It means I keep what I subscribed for if I leave premium.

For what the premium package is asking, the $350 price point is acceptable. Also nice Nintendo isn't making US gamers pay out for an HDMI cable.

Wii U European launch date: November 30, 9 launch titles -Destructoid

Pricing is way too high. The equivalent of $320 for the baseline model is fucking ridiculous when the Japanese and Americans are paying that much for the premium package. That and they get it sooner with more games available.

        What the fuck Nintendo?

Standard package is $20 more in Europe than the US and $30 less than the US premium.

All things considered, I think Europe got lucky this time. The real question is what the games are priced over there.

There was a third bundle just announced for Japan - Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate Bundle. God I would hate to be someone in the games division at Sony right now. Tables are being flipped and people yelled at, most likely.

Premium package is the equivalent of $375 in the UK if the Dtoid article is correct. Last time I checked 375 is more than 350. The Pound and Euro are close to parity so it will cost a little less in Mainland Europe

As for games, a brand new console game will set you back up to $70 in the UK and a little less in Mainland Europe.

Yes it is the reason why PC gaming and Steam is massive in Europe compared to the US and Japan.

Capacitive touch screens aren't cheap. Besides, Xbox 360 controllers are somewhere around $50. A controller with a touch-screen that can play games in its own right? It's not inconceivable that it could cost three times as much.

I preordered the premium version. I have a five game rule and the launch window exceeds it.

Bit.Trip Runner 2 (only feels right with Nintendo)

That actually sounds like a great idea. It only took until last generation for Nintendo to realise that propriety storage just puts off the consumer at the end of the day, and it's nice to see that they are sticking with that unlike Microsoft and Sony.

Sony seems to be going in the opposite direction, as does Microsoft. The PS3 was awesome in that you would slap a laptop HD in there and it would work as well as all forms of memory stick. The original XBox was compatible with the old IDE HDs but they regressed to propriety storage with the 360. I'm hoping they will wake up and realise that not only is shedding propriety storage it a great way of cutting costs, but propriety storage is just anti-competitive.

I've honestly never gotten a HDD for my 360 and when I did have a PS3 it was easy to max the 160 GB just because of how hideously inefficient installing from a BD is. I could probably get a cheap 1TB or even 2TB external drive for cheaper than MS could give me a 250 GB drive new.

This is why I use thumb drives on the 360, so I'm at least grateful MS allowed that option, particularly since Sony took it away. I won't even get into Sony's memory formats or Apple's premiums on the pittance they offer in terms of memory.

Nintendo seems to like to keep it practical and consumer-friendly.
