It wasn't without some charm (fleshing out Vincent's character), but the gameplay and just.... ugh, the game was just so bad even Japan totally hated it. The story & cast were all pretty forgettable as well.


Crisis Core was just infinitely better.

Agreed on Crisis Core. Even though I knew what was coming... it still didn't prevent me from crying a little when I got to the end of that game. In fact... you're not a real fan of the series if you didn't cry at least a little.

I liked Crisis Core a lot. Dirge of Cerberus is the worst game I've ever played that bore the Final Fantasy name (saying a lot considering how terrible I find FF1 as well as Crystal Bearers on the Wii). If FFXIV hadn't gotten fixed, it would rank lower than DoC, but in the current state it's in now, I think I can give it the benefit of the doubt and raise it higher than Crystal Bearers.

I own Crystal Bearers purely for the fact that I collect anything and everything that calls itself Final Fantasy. Sadly... it seems that it was people like me they were banking on when they made it. They certainly weren't expecting its popularity to spread from word of mouth. That game was an abortion.

I don't think Raydeus or I were all J9 about DoC, it was just a game we played and thought was OK. Crisis Core was worlds better than anything else called "Final Fantasy VII." FFVII's star has long since been outshined and it wasn't brighter than FFVI to start with.

The last time SE really tested the limits of FF was FFX-2, Dissidia and Chains of Promathia. X-2 was FFV+FFVI+Sailor Moon and still more enjoyable than most of what's been produced since. Dissidia failed in story, but the fanservice and dedication to character uniqueness was amazing. CoP needs no explanation - it was the last time FFXI had an edge to it.

You misunderstand. I'm not saying that SE didn't try to push the limits of the genre. I'm simply making fun of you for suggesting that they have done it WELL.

DoC and X-2 are spin-offs of the worst possible kind. They took characters and lore from a game you LOVE and they inserted them into something completely different and untested. What resulted was nothing but a great idea poorly executed.

You want to test the boundries of a genre? Make a unique game and let it either succeed or fail all on its own. That way if it fails, at least it's forgettable. Taking a beloved game like FFX or FFVII (from your flagship series) and spinning out a terrible experiment of a game only upsets the fans you still have.

Defending those games is like defending Spirits Within for trying to break the mold of Final Fantasy being strictly for game titles. That movie, along with those games... should be abandoned at the bottom of the hole you're digging.

You're not providing examples, though. Have you actually played FFX-2?

Set the characters and story aside and place it against FFX, FFXII and FFXIII.

XIII was originally based on X-2 and then stripped out everything that made that battle system fun then handicapped you with two party members for over half the game after one taste of a three member party. Now SE wants it to be just Lightning after slightly recovering with XIII-2 because they apparently played a couple western RPGs.

It's sad to say DQIX and DQX seem more risky of late. I want to be excited for Bravely Default, but it really just sounds like FFV reskinned. That might be cool if they hadn't reissued FFIII and FFV to death, on top of the recent FF Dimensions.
