The best games you never played or the worst you forced yourself through...
Re: The best games you never played or the worst you forced yourself through...
I was worried The Last Story would be limited as crap, so I pre-ordered it. That box it comes in is quite gorgeous to look at. Haven't opened it yet since I'm working on some back log :x I also managed to grab Xenoblade Chronicles and I think you'll enjoy it Mal, at least I hope you do. ^^
Anywho,
Games that are touted as good that I have yet to try:
Mass Effect Series
MGS
Pokemon games
Final Fantasy Tactics
Fallout Series
Portal 2
Resident Evil 1-3
Silent Hill 2
There's probably more but I can't really think of them at the moment
I'm currently dragging myself through XIII. The constant push forward and linearity is pretty tiresome. Wish I had more time to roam around Nautilus. Most games that I don't particularly care for I usually just stop playing. Probably will get slammed for this but I wasn't fond of KOTOR as much as I'd hoped. Thought the gameplay was kinda clunky so I put it down after a while. Unlimited SaGa was a confusing mess for me (I'm probably just retarded) so I put that one away rather quickly.

Okay. I'm still waiting to hear FFX-2's problems as an actual RPG, Not story problems, as I'm not exalting that point. Then again, to dissect it as a game you'd have to actually have to play it.
I do want Xenoblade though, and Last Story - holding off on buying TLS for a little bit as most stores still have plenty of copies and I can only play so many RPGs at once lol. And you already said you'd help me out with Rosetta Stone for JP - still waiting on that
TLS is pretty short as RPGs go, given its fascination with duck-and-cover gameplay, though I guess you could get more milage out of it with online multiplayer. I've not tried the MP yet.
I'd make both an equal priority there are plenty of copies of Xenoblade in my immediate area. I suppose I or someone else could work something out (though it would probably amount to you hunting down some obscure game I couldn't find since i hate dealing with cash in the mail).

I already listed those problems along with the story problems. Now who isn't reading?

And I did say that about Rosetta stone in JP, didn't I? Holy shit I forgot. PM me your address and I'll burn out a copy of it to send to you this weekend, mal.

I know. See how annoying that not-reading thing is to others?
Sailor Moon-type costume changes that took forever
Length could be decreased or eradicated in options menu
- Yuna became a singer? Where the fuck did that come from?
Effect of the dressphere grid, Shinra explained it.
- Limit breaks were a waste of time 99% of the time
Trance was worthless 99.9% of the time in FFIX and Limit Breaks were not terribly useful in the game that invented it once Knights of the Round can be mimed ot hell and back. FFVIII was about the only place Limit Break was ever a critical thing and even that was gone once you mastered Junctioning.
- Shu-Puffs
Ride zee Shoopuff?
- x3 Gunners = Easy Mode
With a lucky rabbit's foot and no status aliments being thrown at you, maybe.
- 100% completion reward wasn't worth the effort
Usually the case in the age of Youtube, which wasn't back then. I generally keep my expectations low on rewards for 100%ing any game.
- Pain (or however you spell her name)
The mature center of a group with a secret past = Clearly annoying.
- Combat was overly repetative
So you missed the part where it was a turn-based JRPG with random encounters?
- Not enough sidequests
Wut. Side quests were like half of the game.
- Copy-paste landscape with hardly any original maps
Given its a story about how Spira is two years later, I think some of that is to be expected.
- No playable male characters
Boo hoo.
- Pandered too much to a female-centric crowd
See above. I guess Rikku's creepy cousin, the male leaders of rival factions and recurring characters weren't enough

Was this too long?

I caved and decided to nab TLS today while I was out - it was on sale at Gamestop for $44.99 so I said why not - they're running out of copies fast. Also found out that they literally ran out, Canada-wide, of LE copies for Halo 4 - glad I made that pre-order way back.
As for Xenoblade, I'm gonna have to venture out to Rockland or Cornwall for that, or bite the bullet on Ebay... ugh really don't want to get it off ebay, it's gonna cost me $80+ easily with the shipping and taxes (everyone wants at least $70 in all the listings I saw, some as high as 120)
Also picked up PE: the 3rd birthday (was used for $15 -10% with my edge card), another game I've been wanting to get my hands on. I know it's pretty different from 1 and 2, but ... Aya, even without her mitochondria powers. That just leaves the new growlancer and possibly Tales of Graces F (which is on sale again for $40) but I don't wanna spend too much money right now, and have more than enough games to play - armored kill goes live in 5 days for xbox ^_^
- Trance was totally useful, you must have been doing something wrong
- Did you forget about Omnislash?
- Luck Rabit's foot not-withstanding
- Paine isn't mature... she's goth and brooding and probably a lesbian. Her character was essentially a younger Lulu without the dolls.
- FFX-2 limiting you to only 3 characters who cannot be interchanged with anyone else was nothing short of a bitter mechanic disappointment.
- The copy-paste is to be expected... yes... but give me new places to add to it. More than just a handful. If I wanted to experience Spira, I would have just replayed X.
- The lack of a male character isn't a sexism hot button for me, it's just annoying to buy a game for action and excitement and find out that it's nothing but glamorized dress-up inserted into an RPG.
- NPC's do not imbue the proper doses of testosterone into the game to counterbalance the "OMG GIRLZ, LET'S HAVE A CONCERT! THAT WILL TOTES RAISE PEOPLES SPIRITS!"
- Fuck you and fuck your Shu-Puffs. If I want to cross the fucking water, I'll swim.
There is so much fail in this sentence (even by Yggy standards) that I'm just going to blame the localization and all the resulting things lost in translation.

Re: The best games you never played or the worst you forced yourself through...
I had fun playing X-2. I suppose that's all that should matter. I was a bit miffed that Blitzball was taken out, but overall I felt X-2 was a good game.
Raydeus, I am pretty curious about the 'inside joke' you were referring to and what was lost/missed with the localization. Can you explain?
- - - Updated - - -
So Yyg, part of Paine not being mature is her possibly being a lesbian? wut?
I liked the idea of Blitzball, but turning what looked like aquatic soccer and turning it into a turn-based affair with status ailments isn't really the best way to bring believabling to a ficticious sport.
Sphere Break and Gunner's Gauntlet in FFX-2, however, were the best minigames to hit FF since Triple Triad.
I was less keen on Tetra Master, but that's because letting cards level up always leads to a less-than-balanced card game.

Also, I think Paine was going for Joan Jett with a fauxhawk. I don't see the lesbian part, she seemed to have an interest in Nooj but that was in the past. Rikku had obvious bicurious behavior, though, given she was all about wanting to see Paine's breasts in the hot spring.

But that's what you always do, regardless of context.
