Dark Souls fans can 'Prepare to Die' on Steam and consoles | Joystiq

I really love Dark Souls and when FromSoftware announced they would have a big announcement for "fans of Dark Souls", I was pretty disappointed when the announcement was only pertaining to PC "Prepare to Die" edition; and, it didn't give any information regarding the extra content making it to consoles as DLC. I was disappointed but I still knew they'd most likely get the extra content to us console gamers. Well, they finally announced it today. I'm buying this day one. People will complain that PC gamers are getting it for free and earlier... I don't really give a damn. I just want more Dark Souls. Was really stoked when they just announced that Demon's Souls servers weren't being taken down. Really want to get back into that game.

I'm wondering how this new content will affect the PvP community. New gear = new builds. I'm only now getting involved with the PvP aspects (aside from getting invaded), so I'm kinda curious.

Also I'm glad they decided to release the game on Steam for all the PC gamers... was tired of hearing all the whining about GFWL.

Only thing better would be announcement about a 3rd 'Souls' game releasing this year or next.

I stopped playing Dark Souls for two reasons. For starters, the game became an unreasonable time sink. Enemies had way too much health, often the ability to evade the fight, and sometimes the ability to heal. I don't have ten minutes to spend fighting the same enemy. Second, the PvP scene was ruined by people who exploited a bug to gain an unlimited amount of souls. By the time they squashed the bug it had been abused to the point where every invasion was against somebody with completely upgraded everything and pointless to participate in, and I grew tired of restarting my kit.

Well, Dark souls isn't for some people. No worries.

I have a character that I did that exploit on. Never had a glitched character before so I made one (574) right before they took the exploit away. I've never invaded with him. People who invade me get a pretty nasty surprise though. Kinda fun having everything and a absurdly high lvl for those times. However, I'm currently bringing up a character legitimately to SL 120 that my girlfriend never played. Guess there are players that organize a 'fight club' thing around that SL. It'll also be interesting to see how many NG+'s I get thru at that lvl.

I'm looking forward to the new area to explore, for sure. I wonder if the add-on area will work kinda like the painted world. I wonder if FromSoft will make it so that you'll need to go through the extra content in multiple NG+'s to get everything from it. That would kinda screw over many of those people who took exploited characters to where they couldn't progress. That'd be kinda funny.

The fighting mechanics really are what keep me going. Idk exactly what it is about the controls, but they feel really natural. The interwoven areas and fully connected world was also a good touch for me this time around. Gives me a feeling of playing a MetroidVania'ish game. I honestly haven't had a (nonMMO) game with this much replay value for me since I picked up SotN on XBLA and found out I hadn't really beaten the game the first time I'd played it when it first came out. I quit playing Skyrim cuz I had to go back for more Dark Souls. For my bday recently I got Witcher 2, Arkham City, Amalur, and AssCreed Brotherhood ... and all I want to do is keep playing Dark Souls.

Funny. That, on a FFxi forum, lol.

I mastered Demon's Souls, I have no problem with Dark Souls beyond the poor design decisions and community of exploitative players.

As I recall there's a certain level range you have to be within to invade another player's game, so wouldnt that just mean its the grossly high level New Game plus modes that are being abused? I can't imagine there's much of that going on in the first few tiers of difficulty.

You'd be surprised. People would purposefully run the game without spending a single soul on attributes and levels until they obtained the item they needed to exploit with, obtaining weapons and armor along the way. With the millions of souls they could fully upgrade their gear completely and begin invading low level players. I did the same thing in Demon's Souls, sans the exploit and upgraded gear.

I just saw the preview for the Prepare to Die edition. What I could make out of the flashes of new content looks pretty awesome. There are several regulare areas I recognized that had been manipulated to be functional for the new content. Like that room above the bonfire that's above the strong-man smith.

Kinda has me questioning if I want to complete my run thrus I have going just yet. It'd be difficult but I'm contemplating shelving Dark Souls until the new content. I have the backlog of games, for sure.

Yeah... you can invade within 20 SL's of your current SL. But, there's always going to be griefers in any game. They seem to be a minority for me though. When I have gotten my butt kicked I just pick myself up, dust myself off, continue what I was doing before I was interrupted. There are also those who invade you and then gift you awesome gear. I've allowed myself to be summoned for a boss fight and given away several shinies I'd have wanted at lower lvls. In any case, it's easy to avoid even being a target of an invasion. If you have to be human for something (ie, getting NPC to invade, summon help, etc) just go offline. Trying to lvl through a particularly 'invasive' area, go offline or go zombie. Griefing can totally be avoided rather easily.

Yeah, if you just don't want other people invading, all you have to do is pull the cord or not log in to Xbox Live. Plus I know all the designated boss areas are not possible to invade, so if I just need help from people in that stretch of the game I just go online at those points.

I also have a hard time believing its that common since the criteria for invasion requires a consumable item.

Demon's Souls co-op was abused to hell and back based on its matchmaking criteria being less sensitive, in either game getting griefed is 100% avoidable. You do miss out on markings and ghosts, but if you want a controlled game, Demon's and Dark Souls do nothing to stop you. When you go online and restore your humanity, you know the risk of invasion is always there if you're in an invadable area.

I know you can send an invader away by going through a boss's fog door and that they can't invade during the actual boss battle; but, I'm not sure that the areas just outside the boss fights are immune to invasion. Maybe I just misunderstand you though. One of my most memorable deaths early on was when I decided to take a break (to work my courage up) right in front of the fog door before the giant golem fight. I came back to find that someone had invaded me, found me, and killed me. Later, I was having a difficult time in Anor Londo clearing the super giants outside the Smough/Ornstein fight before someone would invade. All I wanted was to avenge the Firelink shrine Fire Keeper and I just kept getting invaded. Then I realized I could just simply disconnect.

You guys are weak. I'm not going to make any compromises in the way I play a game because somebody wants to break the rules. I'll simply abstain from playing.

Sorry it was too difficult of a game for you. Quitting was probably the best option for you.

Because fighting exploiters = difficulty intended by developers.

Um, co-op is abused to hell in Demon's Souls. I don't have to exploit the holes there to make it a vanilla co-op game.

                          Just sayin'.

Both games are designed to be functional without online connections in the event there is no online connection or server. That tells me the developers intended me to have that freedom or they'd have slapped an online DRM on it. Etra would probably like and apologize for such a DRM.

Apparently they were also aware servers might go done for good one day and didn't want to leave the game unplayable.

If turning it into the solo experience it will eventually be is weak," oh well. I just want the experience on my terms, and its simple as logging out. You want an online game people won't exploit, which is unattainable.
